The Fading Flame: Why We Lose Interest in Our Ideas

in Hive Learners2 months ago

Have you ever gotten an idea for something or planned to do something, but after some time that you have not done it, you lose interest in doing it?

If you are in this category of people, then you are not alone. This literally happens to everyone at some point, and I believe it is common to every human. I am not excluded since I am human, in fact, it happens to me very often, which is more of the reason why I am writing this article today.

This post would cover common psychological reasons why you tend to lose interest in your ideas and plans. Also, we will discuss possible solutions to these causes. So let us go there.

Procrastination

One common thing people do when they have an idea is to procrastinate on it. They don't act immediately and on-time; they decided to shift it and tell themselves that they will do this later on afterwards. They fail to write down the ideas or measure the importance of that ideas.

There is one thing about ideas: the more the delay, the less the interest, and this is because I have seen over time that the inspiration that provided that idea does not stay the same. If you don't take action during the time you had the idea, there are likely possibilities the interest in the idea might decrease.

My Advice

If an idea comes and you may be busy at that point, always make sure to write it down. Ideas flow like the wind, and if you don't capture them on paper, you may lose them and eventually forget about them. Writing on paper will make it easy not to forget, and most importantly, get to work on the ideas written immediately after you are free.

Begin building plans and strategies towards that idea. Start taking actions and keep building on that idea. This way, you minimise the effect of procrastination on your ideas.

The next, which is on the line, is Fear of Failure.

Fear of Failure

When you have an idea and you allow your fears to overwhelm it because you are afraid of the likelihood of it coming to pass, you are probably not going to work on it, or you may end up procrastinating on making an action about it.

We have already spoken about our procrastination contributes to this. It is good to note that fear of failure can make you procrastinate as well because you don't have the courage to take the necessary steps.

My Advice

One way to fight the fear of failure is by believing in yourself and also in the result you seek. Strategic planning can also reduce fear of failure towards your ideas because you become comfortable and assured of what you need to do to make your ideas turn out successful.

Perfectionism

Perfectionism is the act of being a perfectionist. You always want it to be perfect or have unrealistic expectations. Personally, this has a major impact on me. To some extent, I am a perfectionist, and I can repeat something until it is how it is in my head. In the long run, when I don't get the perfect output, I get to lose interest and don't do it again.

Every perfectionist are like this; they are not satisfied and most of the time it is difficult to meet their expectations. If you are a perfectionist like me, then you would have gone through times when you would have to repeat something so many times because you feel it is not good enough.

Looking at it from another angle, you could even be saying I can't take action on this idea because I don't have the standard equipment needed to work on this idea. You will prefer waiting till the perfect time before being able to take actions or work on your ideas.

My Advice

The best way to solve this issue is to remind yourself that perfection is a myth; nothing is literally perfect but can be close to perfect or unique in its way. Take actions with what you have at hand and never wait for the perfect moment; it will never come.

Take action now, and while you take action, if you think of perfection, you will never attain it. Instead, think of being creative and unique, and don't make your expectations unrealistic.

The longer the delay the lesser the passion or enthusiasm will become. A lot of ideas can be lost if not written down, the faintest pen is stronger than the strongest memory.

Every humam experiences these things and it is a pity thay it's a nature that can't be helped, can only be adjusted to certain degrees.

Brother, I retweet this. This is so true.

Yeah true. This is why there is need for self-awareness and self-visualisation. One would know how he can prevent all these and know how to handle the situation of things.

One needs to be true to self to prevent these things.

The article is great bro.

The craziest thing is that all these reasons are in our head. Your biggest fight is with you. If you can fight what your head is telling you, if you can push past the lies your mind is filling you with and MOVE. that is a great great power

Love the post!!!! Very needed

Yeah that is why I called it psychological reasons. And if we can learn to push pass the lies that the mind fill us with, then we will be able to do great things.

thanks for sharing your insights. I really appreciate it.

Exactly. Always lovely to read your posts too

you could even be saying I can't take action on this idea because I don't have the standard equipment needed to work on this idea.

This used to be me. I didn't take up some jobs because I dont have the machines. It also made me procrastinate a lot

The statement start with what you have but start right from a business coach liberated me. That was when I started outsourcing.

The worst thing about being a perfectionist is that you get overwhelmed with a lot of activities because it's hard to delegate.

I have also been in this scenario myself, or would I say I am still in it and trying to overcome the aspect of being a perfectionist. What you said about delegation is very true, about perfectionist, they prefer to do it themselves because they trust no one can do it as they would.

Hmm... overcoming perfectionism is gradual. I'm not fully out of that shoe myself. I only taught myself to gbójú as in overlook things I get other to do for me trusting that it'll get better.
