Private vs Government owned: The Healthcare Dilemma

Just last week, I got a call from a friend. He was severely weak to even talk properly over the phone. I knew it was something serious. This was a friend who had been visiting the hospital for more than a year because of some complaints.

January 2024 was when the visitations to the hospital started, it was to a government hospital. He got the attention he needed truly, and he got medicine recommendations from the doctors he met, and for the main time, the medications worked.

Barely three months later, he went down with the same illness, but this time, he went to another government hospital, and he met other doctors who according to him attended to him very well too. He ran some tests, and he got some medical recommendations, and he bought the medications.

Two weeks ago, he went back to the hospital. Actually, I had thought that he would be admitted because of the complaints he had. They were too many for him to not be admitted at the hospital. But, on getting there, he met the doctors, ran some tests, and he was sent back home. We thought he would be just fine after using the recommended medications.

I understand that he wasn’t admitted because there are limited bedspaces available, which are mostly reserved for emergency cases. I really wish government will pay attention to these things though.

Last week Saturday, I tried to reach him to ask about his health, and I was met with no response. He wasn’t someone that wouldn’t be with his phone, so I tried again. I decided to take a break from calling, and by Monday morning, when I got his call, he sounded weak. It was the day after he finished his medications, when everything took a new turn.

He went down with diarrhoea, and the medical practitioner that was invited gave him an injection that would stop the diarrhoea. I wasn’t comfortable with those recommendations, so we took a trip to the private hospital where I use. On getting there, he was immediately admitted and placed on fluids to replace the ones he already lost.

Then, blood sample was collected to run a detailed test on him and later to listen to his complaints after which detailed treatment was administered.

Even though he got the comprehensive treatment he needed, we had to start looking for the money to sort the bills as soon as he was admitted. But what matters to me is that he regained his health and returned home at 90% than he went. It was such a relief.

Four years ago, when I fell ill, I didn’t look like an emergency, and if I had went to a government hospital the way I entered the private hospital I used, I most likely wouldn’t have been attended to fast because I didn’t look like I was an emergency case when all I was trying to do was hold it in till I met a doctor.

The private hospital I used, at some point, the medical practitioner there called in a neurosurgeon when my case graduated to that level, and together, they found a solution.

Private organizations are actually good because you’re certain of getting the attention you need immediately because the owner understands that the reputation of the hospital depends on the services.

However, nothing beats the availability of specialists for different cases, and the low costs of getting the treatment at a government-owned hospital. On the other hand, private hospitals would give you a quicker and more personalized care, but you may need to pay through your nose.

I agree with you that there are lack of beds in government hospital as their management of funding sometimes poor..... I'm happy that you and your friend get a cure

The situation of your friend and how the doctor were unwilling to admit him and get him well treated us why many of us prefer the private sector In almost every field, although expensive, but it's better.
