Away From My Phone

in Hive Learnerslast year (edited)

The evolution of technology over the years has brought a lot of improvement in the daily lives of humans. This development ensures that new products are introduced relative to different industries ranging from medicine, engineering, telecommunication, education and so on. Critically looking back at when technological evolution started, I do not think there is a definite point in time because we were not there centuries back. However, it is worth noting that the fastest rate of technological advancement happened in just about 3 decades.

Taking one of the features of a biological cell, all technologies are built on previously existing technology.

A product of technological development is the smartphone. I call a smartphone one in which many computers and their related abilities merged into one small entity that could fit in our palms and pockets. With mobile apps and phone-enabled applications, the smartphone is created to be a part of humanity, I believe. Yes, because the main people behind it are business-oriented people who need to wade in as much monetary return as possible.

Stumbling on this topic has got me thinking about the relationship between my phone and me, honestly, I am not sure if I could do without it for long. Although, if it still happens, I am sure I could still survive in the long run. Just last month, I remember I woke up to see some of the apps on my phone had been uninstalled. There was no explanation for it, but somehow I realised I survived not being ‘online’ for about a day or so. In as much as it was not as easy as it sounds, I still managed. But I do not think I would want that to happen again.

Now, to the main point, there are still certain things that could easily, or otherwise, pull me away from my phone for at least a short time. One such is when I am in a church service. This is simply because I believe I am in the presence of a Supreme being hence no form of distraction will allow me, to receive or learn whatever is in stock for me. Looking back, before I left for school, I was a fan of not even bringing a phone along to church because a little distraction can set in at any time that will make you check your phone and off you go neck deep until time passes.

Examination periods are one of those moments when I get disconnected from my phone such that even if I am using the phone to read, there is somewhere in my subconscious that assumes there is nothing like social media for example. This could be partly because as an engineering study, you have to READ. The word is in block letters for strong emphasis. We have a slang, once you don't know it, you don't know it.

Lastly, there exist special moments when I just love to be alone, either ruminating about life, brainstorming or anything. At such moments, I could be so deep into it that I lost track of time and my phone may only come in handy when I need to jot an idea down in the absence of pen/paper.

In conclusion, I think humans in this present age should work on reducing time without phones and more to interacting with fellow humans socially. This is so we do not feel socially ignored when that distraction wades off.

So good to know that we all have a time that we can stay away from our smartphones no matter how dear we needs it, like examination tomes. Thanks for sharing @temibot. Greetings.

Examination period for any engineering student in Nigeria especially, is one that requires utmost concentration else one may miss it entirely...🤣

I do the same in the period of examination. It's becoming very difficult to do without phone but one needs to do that once in a while to actualize some tasks.

Yeah, in this digital age, most of our educational materials are becoming softcopies. So you can not entirely do away with phones or any digital device. Thanks for your input, @lightpen
