Anger, frustration and sadness has covered my entire mind and being. Ending it all is just how it feels, should I give up or keep moving, how much more can I take??
Hello 👋 hive learners community and beyond this is me again and in today's post, I will be talking about how I cope with the issues of life in my country.
So it's no secret that the economy in my country has been getting to everybody recently the prizes of things have been crazy increasing of lately. The cost of our living has increased, transportation has increased, housing has increased and when is left was wonder how can I keep up with this changes. The height of this is the price of food stuffs especially when living as a student. The amount of allowance received in the past cannot cater for the needs of an average Nigerian student anymore there by leaving them to source for alternative routes. Recently, the government of the United Kingdom had to send a handful of students back home to Nigeria because they couldn't pay up the activation tuition for the next academic session that's how tough living has caused.
The annoying part of this is that you come online or you check the news and discover that the government keeps on telling us to manage that things will get better and likes of that but they spend billions of Naira renovating houses that they are not using borrowing money to buy private jets that's not needed and they still expect us to manage while they can't. Is that how it supposed to be? Seeing or hearing all these is enough to put one into depression or cause one to be mentally unstable.
The cases of suicide and suicide attempts have surged in the last 1½ years. The time this happened was in 2008 but it seems this is the highest case so far. According to a publication by a news agency in Nigeria,
According to data made available by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to Sunday Vanguard, between January and July 2023 (seven months), a total of 82 cases of suicide were recorded in Lagos alone.
In July alone, LASEMA said there were 22 cases of suicide.
and this is just from the State of Lagos.
Apart from the suicidal rate increasing, there has been cases of high violence and thefts.
Different people have resulted in finding alternative ways to forget the hardship resulting in adaptation to materials to keep oneself happy or is there such a thing as genuine happiness anymore??
Materials such as drugs, alcohol, games etc
To me, when I find myself overwhelmed by the recent cases all I do is shut down and do the following
- Play Games
The first thing I do is put my phone on DND and either game. One game I find myself at peace with of recent is the COD (Call Of Duty). This game has helped cleared my head in more ways than I can imagine. How does it help? it helps my making me focused on something different strategizing and planning how to kill my enemies (most times, I imagine the enemies to be the government) then I get more kills transferring the range.
Another game I enjoy is Township. I love playing this with the same reason as the other but sadly, this isn't a violent game but it works.
- Watch Movies.
As a movie lover, I disappear into the fantasies in movies to escape the reality around me. In as much as I know that it is just a move, I love that I can enjoy a good movie in times like that but if the movie is bad, I will just transfer the aggression to the producers but watching a good movie is a way I recharge.
Others include listening music from a good device (especially if it's an airpod or earphones) you get to enjoy the base and lyrics.
Eating also clears my mind. When I'm overwhelmed by reality and I have money, I just dress up and head to the nearest restaurant and load myself with food. I remember when my friend and I used to treat ourselves with full chicken and rice every month for just making it through the toughest and for a job well-done.
While others enjoy drinking, smoking, having sex and others, the above are my go to therapists while Nigeria begins to pass through me. I await your comments.
Keep buzzing 🐝🐝🐝
You have said it all, and all that you engage in to be happy again works perfectly for me too.
So you also eat when depressed??
Now Nigerian economy alone can generate sadness in anyone, that is a fact. Whenever I'm sad I watch movies as well, maybe movies that relate to my mood at the moment.
I don't watch movies that will remind me of why I am watching it ooo.
I'd rather go for sci-fi or comedy maybe romance (make I dey laugh people's foolishness)😂😂
Haha, there’s actually no funny thing in this economy but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be happy.
There’s joy in the little things and that’s the beauty of life.
Joy where??
