"will you stop shouting my name at night do you want evil spirits to hear my name?"
this was what my elder sister yelled at me when I was trying to call her to deliver a message from mum.
At first, I thought it was because she was irritated then I got more clarity after hearing it from more people.
SUPERSTITIONS
This post was actually influenced from a discussion I had yesterday with a friend where she asked me not to turn the head of a local broom facing the ground and out of curiosity, I asked and she gave the reason.
I'm sure you also want to know the reason lol 😆
According to her, turning a bunch upside down (local broom, keys) or anything in bunch means you are one that exposes secrets.
According to Merriam-Webster,
superstition is a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation.
I beliceve superstitions have been a part of our lives for as long as we can remember. It does not only shape how we act or the traditions we follow it also influences how we interact with others. Whether it's avoiding washing at night or covering mirrors while it is raining or in my case calling someone's name at night, these funny beliefs stayed around because, deep down, there is a deeper meaning to them. But why do these age-old notions still have a grip on us, even in our "woke generation"?
I can remember a time like that while I was very young. My mum had travelled for an event leaving just myself and siblings at home. A neighbor was also with us since she is a friend. One thing led to another then salt fell on the floors. The shout she let out could have destroyed the building and was like do this and do that to prevent this and that. Of course, we ignored her warnings and she said that if we don't do that, there will be a great fight in the house and she left saying that she doesn't want to be involved when the commotion starts. To be honest, after several hours, we all had a fight amongst ourselves. I don't know if it was a coincidence or something but I know that whenever salt pours on the falls again, that day comes playing in my head.
There are more and more especially in this part of the world some are similar with slight differences such as America has tooth fairy and we here in Nigeria believes that when a tooth falls, you wrap it in a paper, pick up small stones as much as your age and toss it on the roof. Why is this so? I don't know. I just know that I did it.
Are they real?
This answer is not for me to decide but for you. Remember that back in those days in my country Nigeria, they used to be a believe that giving birth to twins was considered a bad omen that could bring calamity upon the society and hence they needed to be killed. Now that people stopped believing how are communities that birthed twins doing?? This thing goes as far to even religion (but I will stop there).
The truth about all these is that what ever we believe in so much influences our life. If you think you will have bad luck for wearing all black, then trust me, you will start seeing all things that have never worked out for you forgetting the positives.
So why then did our ancestors come up with all these?
But answer this question first, what's the true essence of father Christmas??
To promote goodness amongst humanity (kids especially) right??
Now imagine if it wasn't widely recognised. Another person of groups of people could have changed the entire concepts leaving aside the moral of it. What I am trying to say here is that most things were formed to teach a lesson having a genuine reason behind it and along the line as time passed, people heard the wrong things and the interpretation changed.
So, does our choices influence our lives?YES.
Should we let just anyhow believe cloud out judgement?
NO
Why?
We aren't roberts. We can think for ourselves. Remember that if can easily convince and control your mind, everything around your goes inline with what you desire.
What do you??
Are SUPERSTITIONS REAL??
