This week we talk about our security on hive; as users/nodes of this blockchain. We talk about what to have in place to ensure your hive account and all that you have accumulated with it really belongs to you and stays with you. Not to wake up one day and finds out someone has taken ownership of your hard earned account worth.

If you are not careful tho, this can easily happen to you, God forbid tho. Only the thought of it is even scary. Even for my little account, I would have a mental breakdown to have it hacked. Again, God forbid. Lol

Yeah right, God will only help you if you make an effort to help yourself.

You woke up early in the morning to find out that your keys are not working and your account is not logging in, then you find out your account has been hacked.

what would be your next move to recover your account?

I think it is because of a such a day that there is a Recovery Account. (Read on to learn about Recovery Account)

Another way I would try is to use my private master key to try to recover the account. The master key is one of the five keys generated for you on your creation of a hive account. In fact, it is the key that is used to generate all of the other keys; active key, memo key, posting, owner key. All these keys have their unique use cases. If you lose these keys your master key can be used to generate them for you.

With this piece of information, if I were you, I would make sure to keep my master key at an even higher priority.

How does having a recovery account help in this situation and what do you understand by Recovery account?

Many systems/platforms today have this feature inbuilt in it. It gives you the opportunity to entrust someone else with the security of your account. Someone to vouch for you to prove that your account really belongs to you in the event that you lose your account. Apple iPhone has this feature.

You can basically give someone else certain rights to your account and say, I want this person to be a witness that this is really my account, it really belongs to me. You set this person as a trustee to your account.
What this means is that this person holds certain unique keys to unlock your account any day you are unable to unlock the account yourself.

One of the easiest ways to view more details about your account including which account is set as your Recovery Account is through this link https://hiveblocks.com/your username.

For most if not all of us who created Hive accounts through Hive OnBoard, @ocdb is our default recovery account.

This is how to set a Recovery Account to your Hive account.

When you open the link you’ll see other options you can explore including “Recovery Account”, “Request Recovery”, “Change Recovery Account”, and “Change Keys”.

  • Tap “Change Recovery Account”.

  • Set the “Account to Recover”.

If you are setting a Recovery Account for your own account you will insert your username in this text box like so. Set the “New Recovery Account” ie that account you want to be your recovery account. Now enter your master password and tap “Change Account Recovery”.

In my case, I didn’t change my Recovery Account because I prefer it to be as it is already. Because of that I didn’t press “Change Account Recovery” to see what’s next, but I that’s all there is.

State possible causes that could have resulted in your account being hacked.

One way one can have their account hacked is if they don’t keep their key secured. After creating a hive account, a number of unique keys are generated for you. And each of them having their unique use cases.

It is your responsibility to know as the account owner that, this is your life and if you lose it you basically lose rights to your account. You lose your account with all your wallet worth; you hive power, HBD, Hive, and all the other token you might have invested in.

Look at that! Do you need someone to tell you again that you need to keep your keys in a safe and secured place?

Your keys come in a pdf file. There are a number of ways to keep a pdf file safe and secure.

  • Avoid logging into your account on public computers like the computer lab or the library.
  • Avoid logging into your account on friends’ computers or phones.
  • Do not forget to have it someone that you can easily access from anywhere. They should be safe, secure and accessible.
  • Do not leave your keys just anywhere in your phone. As people take your phone to take picture of view one or two pictures you have no idea where they might end up. So be wise where you keep your keys in your phone.
  • I am not going to mention any definitive place for you to keep you keys. I leave that for you to determine for yourself. Because this could be me selling myself out. Lol

Basically to avoid being hacked, do your best to keep your keys in a secure at place possible, and don’t ever make a mistake to reveal it anywhere, even your public keys. Get used to revealing your public keys and tomorrow you will reveal your private keys thinking they are your public keys.
