True about the translation apps! It's a shortcut, a tool, but you can only use those when you know the trade, otherwise it is just messing around...

I use the translation apps mostly to just translate one or a few words that I donβt understand, or am not sure I understand correctly. I indeed think it isnβt too good to use for much more, as language and communication are waaaay to complicated and multi-faceted to just βreplace words by those in another languageβ so to speak.

Looks like people who wish to communicate using a different language should !INDEED start to learn them gradually (which can be done for free using apps or web platforms), instead of using such translation apps for communication. π§ββοΈπ€π

Best advice: Go there, be forced to speak the language in order to obtain food and such :-D
We easily learn 3-4 languages in school in Belgium. My family lived in Germany for a long time, and my parents lived in Switzerland for a few years. All that helped ;-)
