Over all, it proved to be a nice experience for you walking on those quieter streets. I wonder you if you didn't have some musings sling the walk because such circumstances are prone to trigger some thoughts.

It happened in France and in general, there like to speak in their language instead of English. In Spain too, but in the coastal area and where the cities are living from tourism, English is not a real problem.
