3kms for a 4 year old - our walking challenge

in Wednesday Walk3 years ago (edited)

Lory and I went walk about, we wanted to do some more exploring of the little island down the road from our house.

We walked along the water's edge this time, then zig zagged in and out of the little indigenous garden and headed to unknown territory through a little copse of scrub.

When we emerged, we found ourselves on the edge of a vast salt marsh. Lory had a run around and loved splish~splashing in the little puddles as kiddos do. I'm quite happy for her to get wet, sandy or muddy when we are out on these walks, it's part of the experience.

I thought I was going a bit bonkers at one point because as I walked, stuff kept happening in my peripheral vision. Then I realized I was in the middle of crab county. There were little crab holes everywhere in the sand and any movement would suddenly send crabs scurrying to their bolt holes. Lory found these immensely entertaining and we were able to sneak up on a few to snap some pics.

This Grey Heron was looking all majestic perched at the top of this tree. I really wouldn't have minded having my DSLR with me on this walk. Next time for sure!

On the other side of the embankment was the start of the beach and a really stunning view as the sun started to set. By this point we had already walked about 1,5kms. I was impressed that Lory was still going strong but the cautious mom in me wanted to get off the beach before there was no ambient lighting left.

We headed round the island head and then found the road which would lead back to the car. Lory started getting tired so I piggybacked her most of the way back. There were some bats flitting around us as the sun had already set. Lory exasperatedly told me "Mom I don't like bats that much anymore" - "why not Lores?" "They mess up my hair" was her response. She makes me laugh. I really do enjoy her silly sense of humour.

This is the furthest that Lory and I have walked together in the evening and I think she did really well although the pace is obviously slower than I would normally go on my own, it's pretty pleasant to just walk and get some fresh air with this breathtaking scenery.

Until our next meander.

Adorable! Don't you love the things she says? Do you ever write the stuff down? Like, other than here on hive? I remember my aunt having a book for everything my cousin used to say (and often do). All us cousins featured regularly. Now in our adult years it is more precious than we thought as kids.

Oh absolutely. Sometimes they have me in stitches for good stretches of time. I actually did have a notebook some time back, but with all the upheaval this last while, I have no idea where it is. I'm glad that I'm putting some of it down here though, I think that when she's older, the accounts on here are going to serve as a visual diary of sorts that she can reflect back through our adventures. I wish my mom had done something like this, I would have treasured it immensely.

I'm so glad that your cousin has that book, it must be a so funny going through them and getting a glimpse into what life was like back then, it's almost like a time capsule of your & your cousins childhoods.

Have a lovely evening!

Nice and beautiful scenery the atmosphere will feet at home living there. Like it. Thank you.

Thanks @hsidik there sure is beautiful scenery out here in the Garden Route.

Hey! I like it too and I've not been called a kid for years weeks!

It looks like a pretty legit place to walk and to watch the sun go down. I think I'd like it.

Lol Galen, you'd have a blast there for sure.

Nothing wrong with being childlike, it keeps you young at heart!

The sunsets are gorgeous, aren't they?! It's a peaceful place to wrap up a busy day.

Well, childlike, monkeylike, cavemanlike...Heard it all, deserved most. 😉

Because you're fun 😁. Everyone that doesn't jump in the muddy puddle silently and privately regrets not jumping in the muddy puddle afterwards! It's called FOMOOMP! Say that ten times fast lol.

I know many FOMOOMP's.

🤣 I think we've just created a new swear word.

The world can never have enough.

That is an impressive walk fir a young one and in such a beautiful area
I think it’s good fir young ones yo run and play getting a little wet and muddy makes it all the more fun

So much beauty in that area

Lol 😂 at the bats messing up her hair

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

Hi @tattoodjay
Thank you so much for your comment and for hosting this community. I've also enjoyed many of the walks I've gone on virtually here, I think many people acknowledge how valuable a walk even just once or twice a week can be.

I'm always amazed at how Lory is willing to take up a challenge like this, she's tough for her age. This little island has become one of our favourite options for an evening walk.

Have a lovely day

Its great to see others enjoying seeing walks from around the world
Lory sounds amazing and I bet you both enjoy your walks together

What incredible landscapes and sunsets. It looks like you enjoyed yourselves and your daughter must have had a great time. My son loved splashing in the puddles and the muddier the better, hehe. And they grow up so fast that keep memories like these are a treasure for the future. 😊

Hi @coquicoin

Thanks for the message.
It's such a gorgeous place. Oh I absolutely agree - splashing in muddy puddles is good fun for all - girls, boys, young & old - it's memories like that which you look back on and think "that was a good day".

They do grow up too fast. I often look at Lory and think "where did my little baby go?"

Have a great day

Love this post. It makes me miss the time when Jarrah was 4 years old and used to go on adventures like this together. 4 year olds are awesome, they're so much fun to be with and say the funniest and smartest things.
