Church of St. Sava, magnificent temple on Vračar

in Wednesday Walk6 days ago

When I woke up on Wednesday morning after a whole day of celebration and a rich meal with a feeling of fullness in my stomach, the best I could prepare for myself was a very light breakfast and after that a little longer walk.
The final destination of my walk, this Wednesday, will be the Church of St. Sava on Vračar in Belgrade.

Winter is, although very mild and unexpectedly warm for this time of year.
Old people say that when it's warm at Christmas, we're in for a cold and severe winter at the beginning of spring. If these claims come true, maybe it will be like in the spring of 1993 when it snowed in April... We'll see.
I only know that for this #WednesdayWalk. On January 8, I didn't bring gloves, a hat or a scarf.
I went for a walk in a thin jacket and light shoes.

Since there is no snow (there was before the New year but it melted), the streets and parks I passed through while walking to the temple, I did not take pictures for this post.
After the snow melts, neither the streets nor the parks look clean and pictures of them would only spoil the impression of this post.

There are many people on the plateau in front of the temple, and the festive atmosphere is still felt.

Families with small children took advantage of the beautiful day to walk around the large park in front of the temple.

I enter the temple, but it is not overly crowded. This temple, where liturgies and other religious ceremonies are held, is so big that there is space for tourists, even when liturgies and prayers are in progress.

While waiting in line to pray in front of the icon I photograph the walls and ceiling of the Temple.

If you find yourself in Belgrade, you can visit the temple every day, the entrance is free, and the mosaics you can see in the temple will leave a strong impression on you.
It's the same with me.

No matter how often I come to this temple, every time I admire the beauty and size of the mosaics on the walls and arches of the church.
You get an even stronger impression when you go down to the crypt of the temple, where the ceiling is much lower and where you can observe the work of the mosaic masters up close.

The play of light and golden surfaces on the mosaics create a truly beautiful scene.

If you do not have the opportunity to visit the temple, and you are interested in a little more detail about the story of history, as well as the story about the mosaics and the figures of the saints on them, you can embark on a virtual tour, in which you have various explanations and stories about the temple and the mosaics.

I tried to "catch" some shots of the interior of the temple with the camera of my phone, and I hope that from these pictures you can get at least an impression of the grandeur of this, the largest, Orthodox temple in the Balkans (until the construction of the Temple in Bucharest is completed, which will probably be write someone from Hivers from Romania).

After we finished the prayer, we went to the candle lighting area. We dedicate one candle for the health of all of us, in this world, and the other for all our deceased...

I took a photos of the temple from several angles, from a frog's perspective, I am so small compared to this big temple, like a small frog.

The sun setting behind the clouds gives additional whiteness to this marble facade, but the shading is not so great that the temple cannot be seen. It is illuminated just enough to please the eye.

In the immediate vicinity of the temple, there is the building of the National Library where I spent my time at the end of the last century, in the reading rooms, preparing for exams.

At this moment, my attention was drawn to the building of the National Library by the construction sites in the immediate vicinity of the library, as well as the temple.

I sincerely hope that the contractors on this parking lot know what they are doing and that the work on the underground parking lot will not endanger the foundations of the library building or, the temple.
I say this, because in the past months, in Serbia, there were several situations of damage to buildings, and in Novi Sad, there were also human victims, which is why we now have serious protests against the corrupt government in our country.

I go around the Temple one more time, take pictures of it from several angles and slowly end my Wednesday walk.
