Birdwatching: A Walk Around the Nature Reserve

in Wednesday Walk2 days ago (edited)

For my #wednesdaywalk initiated by @tattoodjay we went somewhere different today, which was walking along the wetlands at the Nature Reserve, Dearne Valley - Old Moor in Barnsley. It is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and is a habitat for various bird species.

It was relatively pleasant weather-wise. Fortunately, there was no rain. Access to the reserve was free for RSPB members, while a fee of £6 was applicable for non-members. The area features several lakes that have been formed from previous open cast mining activities.

We spotted a bearded tit, hanging from the reeds as it searched for food. It was difficult to spot at times.

We then stopped to watch a goldfinch and a blue tit at the bird feeder. Both birds are known for their distinctive colours.

As we walked at the side of the lake, we saw a shoveller and a lesser black backed gull.

In summary, it was a nice easy walk that enabled us to spot a wide range of bird species.
