Hey fellow travelers! This is @fernwehninja, here taking you on a short, budget-friendly, and cozy trip through the Netherlands. If you enjoy discovering hidden gems without spending a fortune, you’re in for a treat.

In this post, I’ll share exclusive insights, essential tips, and personal experiences from my visit to one of Utrecht’s most underrated yet breathtaking spots. Trust me—you won’t want to miss this!🙃

A Vibrant Architectural Marvel

Overlooking the calm waters of Rietplas Lake, the Rainbow Houses (Regenbooghuizen in Dutch) feature a spectrum of bright, cheerful colors. Reminiscent of Scandinavian and Caribbean waterfront architecture, they add a unique, almost storybook-like charm to the landscape.

Definitely a place that feels like a postcard!

Merging Cutting-Edge Design with Natural Splendor

With a focus on sustainability and bike-friendly infrastructure, Houten exemplifies modern urban planning. The Rainbow Houses embody this ethos, set against a peaceful waterfront that enhances both the environment and residents' quality of life.

Each house dons a distinct hue—reds, blues, yellows, and greens—standing proudly against the backdrop of Lake Rietplas.

Pointers on Visiting the Rainbow House

  • Perfect Timing – Visit in the early morning or late afternoon to take advantage of the warm golden light that enhances the vibrant colors. These times provide the best opportunities to capture the catchy reflections on the lake.

  • Easy Access – Houten is conveniently connected by train. From Utrecht Centraal, take a direct train to Houten Castellum Station, then walk just 10 minutes to the Rainbow Houses.

  • Parking Options – If you are driving, free parking is available at P+R Houten Castellum, which is about a 15-minute walk from the location.

  • Nearby Amenities – Although it is primarily a residential area, you can find local cafes and shops for a quick bite or a cup of coffee. For a more relaxing experience, consider bringing a picnic to enjoy the scenic views by the lake.

Here to unwind and recharge with one of my favourite inner circle💛

One of the greatest lessons I've learned about life and friendship is to surround yourself with the right people. Your inner circle is essential to your journey; they are the ones who genuinely uplift and support you, no matter where you are in the world.

Absolutely! Other than a relaxing city escape, no two visits will ever look the same! ...And every season is special, whether it's capturing morning mist, a glowing sunset, or shimmering reflections in the lake, each time you visit, you’ll find a fresh perspective of attraction.
