Only two months passed since my latest Shop Windows... post which it started with a post for the Market Friday Community that is currently inactive, but slowly become a personal series that I complete a little bit more with every new experience I have out there, walking and staring at shop windows.
I know this might sound funny, but I never enjoyed shopping, or at least not IRL - I do lots of it in games or online though.
However, when it comes to travels we are speaking of a completely different feeling as I get the taste of getting to know a bit more of the culture of a country even by looking on what are the most common things you usually see displayed in the windows of the shops.
With this thought, today's post is all about Burano Island, which is well known as one of the most colorful places in the world and perhaps the most colorful island in Europe, but which, funny thing, this can't really be seen through its window shops.
Some of the very first things you will notice being for sale are lots of clothes or items made of lace.
This is because along with all the beautiful and unique colorful houses you will see all over the island, Burano has a long-established tradition of needle-lace making even if concrete details when everything started are not certain.
What is known though, is that in the 19th century, the whole tradition was revived which turned into a great job for most of the locals which were used to earn their income from fishing activities but which had to suffer during the extreme cold winters from the past.
As we walked further, we finally started to see more familiar window shops, such as the colorful souvenirs that seemed to represent the island the best, some very expensive watches and jewelry that are not missing anywhere in Italy remembering about lots of famous brands and shop windows, but also the Venetian masks and some other common souvenirs you will meet all over Venice and its islands.
Some less popular masks are the steampunk ones which even though I've seen in Venice before, they seemed a lot more complex and beautiful on one of the shops from Burano island.
We do have some very similar masks where I'm currently living too but which are obviously not authentic and not even close to how these ones look. Either way, they have something that make me really interested in owning one someday, as they are really fascinating me.
Last but not least, our walk came to an end on a shop window who's smell you could feel from a few tens of meters away due to having lots of natural soaps and products that made even the least curious ones want to enter too.
They even had a deal where you could take 3 soaps for 10EUR only which we wanted to take advantage of, but travelling low cost comes with a very limited space available for souvenirs and we already knew there is no space left in there.
