life was rather difficult, as the mills were owned by wealthy English-speakers and the workers, such as sawyers and log drivers, were French-speaking. And they didn't have the same rights: no access to schools for their children, or even to church... Truly another time.

I forgot I was talking to a Québécois 😉 but I do agree it was even worse than I imagined due to the race/class issues.
Fortunately that has changed... life couldn't have been easy, especially in winter.
