We had family from Johannesburg visiting us last week to spend Christmas with us.
Many people from Johannesburg often get frustrated with "bad weather" at the coast and either become grumpy or in some cases, even pack up and go home.
They need warm "sunny beaches" to make their holiday worthwhile.
On the one hand, I can understand it. They have obviously been dreaming about long, lazy days lying on the beach, getting a nice tan.
Rainy and windy days obviously are quite contrary to what they were dreaming about.
To me personally, even before we moved down here, I couldn't care less about the weather. To me, no matter what the weather conditions are like, it has elements of its own to be appreciated.
Maybe it also has something to do with the fact that I just cannot see myself lying in one spot for hours, just doing nothing...except for frying myself...lol!
This is what I appreciated about my 17-year old niece, who also came down to visit us. She just loves nature, irrespective of the weather.
As a little girl, she grew up in Cape Town and developed a natural love for the ocean.
But my brother-in-law got transferred to Johannesburg and she has spent the biggest part of her life, growing up in Johannesburg. She has clearly not lost her love for nature and the ocean though. They still visit Cape Town at every opportunity they can get.
Even though we had rainy weather over the past week, I had an awesome time taking her around, showing her some awesome sights we have in and around our area.
On Sunday, we decided to take her down to the South Coast.
I was aiming to go down south as far as possible to one of the more remote beaches to get away from the crowded beaches and holidaymakers. We were all in agreement that we would prefer some peace and quiet, just enjoying the ocean.
But, we got as far as Amanzimtoti where the traffic came to a complete standstill. This was where Karin (my niece) started having a giggle at us "Durbanites". We had no clue what was going on.
I mean...we have heavy traffic during peak hours, but coming to a complete standstill...something is wrong somewhere. Yet, she reminded us that in Johannesburg this is an everyday occurrence.
Nonetheless, I decided to take the first possible turn-off I could get and we headed for Amanzimtoti's main beach.
I didn't want to get my hopes up, as Amanzimtoti is also a very popular holiday destination and I thought it would be crowded...which was not exactly what I had in mind.
But to my surprise, we found a parking spot relatively easy.
There was some activity on the main beach, but nothing major. I think this was due to the "bad weather" and clearly with some rain to be expected soon.
While my wife and her mom went to the restaurant to have some coffee, my niece and I headed for the beach.
We easily found a spot that was nice and quiet just south of the main beach.
The wind became stronger and the clouds started moving in. When we found these rocks we decided that it would be the perfect spot to start taking photos.
Karin was clearly also keen on taking photos. So, at times I also handed the camera to her, and between the two of us, we managed to get some nice shots.
The currents were strong and the sand was clearly visible in the surf as the tide started coming in.
The waves started getting bigger and breaking closer to the shore.
I just loved to watch those waves come rolling in...
I also loved the contrast of the white surf against the background of the grey sky.
In the next photo, you can clearly see how the clouds were coming in and how the wind was becoming stronger with the spray on the surf.
The tide was clearly coming in and the waves started breaking closer and closer to the shore.
Waves came rushing in towards the rocks.
By now, the waves started getting bigger and bigger.
It was getting darker as the clouds got lower and thicker, and the white surf on the rocks gave me the opportunity to capture this moment.
And this one...
As the weather got "worse", I managed to get some more photos capturing that "special atmosphere" that goes hand-in-hand with that type of weather...but I'll save those for another post.
So, that's all for today, folks.
Thank you for reading my post. I really do appreciate it.
Love the photos, I like you cant sit still for long i love to be out and about walking, if I had been there I would have bene exploring the beach with you and Karin and My wife would have joined the others in the restaurant
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)
Thank you, @tattoodjay!
That would have been awesome if you could be there to explore with us. Who knows, I would love it if that can really happen one day...I would learn so much from watching you in action!
Thank you for this great comment!
I am sure we would have fun walking, chatting and taking photos, but MY long distance traveling days are in the past for me sadly
No problem. I hear what you say.
I learned to take every day as it comes. We don't know what the future holds. Who knows, maybe one day I can have the privilege of meeting you in person. Some days ago, I mentioned to you about our long-term plans...and it looks like things are seriously moving in that direction.
So yes, for now, let's just make the best of every day.
Hope your king term plans work out
But yes we have to live dayby day and make the most of each day
👍
You can take a trillion photos of the waves when its like this and still want to take a trillion more for every single second is pure majesty as the waves pound the rocks and the water sprays everywhere.
There is nothing more photogenic and the only thing that is (slightly) more mesmerising is a crackling log fire...
So glad that you have had such a wonderful xmas with your family and friends and I send my warmest regards and biggest wishes that you, your family and friends have a wonderful, warm, safe and amazing new year filled with an abundance of love, peace, harmony, good health, much happiness and success!
With Love from Australia

Wow! What an awesome comment!
Yes, it is so true what you say...you just can't stop taking photos when those waves are coming at you like that. We literally took 132 photos to be exact within a matter of a few minutes before the rain chased us...lol!
Oh yes...and that crackling log fire...what more can you ask for? Just the thought of it brings back great memories...
Thank you so much for your kind words and for your wonderful wishes. I appreciate it more than you can imagine.
I hope you also had an awesome Christmas with your family and friends and may you be blessed beyond your wildest dreams in the coming year!
I am so glad we met here. I appreciate your support and for being able to have these conversations with you.
Thank you!!!
132 photos is so easy to do and thankfully we can do that in the digital era otherwise you might get 2-3 on analogue 35mm film to save the other 21 for the rest of the holiday! 🤣
The crackling log fires not only brings back great memories, but also memories of sooooo many photos taken too- even back in the analogue era too! 🤣🙄😳
So glad we met here too and I look forward to many more inspiring and stimulating conversations with you in the new year too.
Also thinking about taking up proper Aikido and/or Krav Maga lessons in the new year too, both for fitness (mostly for fitness as I have none..) and self defense too.
I was taught a few Aikido moves many years ago (1998) and still remember them and I like the commonsense logistics of the movements, but I'd like to learn more about KM too, so I have a few youtube videos to watch first! 🤣
Right now watching tutorials on how to use everything on manual mode in my new Nikon p950 camera and trying to study my animal welfare course too!
A busy year to come, so thank you for your blessings, I really appreciate the wishes!
Aikido is a beautiful and great system. Never had the opportunity to study it myself though.
Both my daughters did Krav Maga. Very practical system. I love it.
All the best with studying the manual for your Nikon and I'm looking forward to seeing those photos.
See you soon, @chocolatescorpi!
From what I know of Aikido and what I've seen of Krav Maga, I think that they could very well be integrated in together too...Anyway, will test those theories soon.
Good night.
Awesome! Let me know how it's working for you?!
Will do!

My idea of a beach is warm and sunny as well. Your photos are lovely though. It shows that beaches can be enjoyed in all weather. I live in the city and wish I could visit the beach soon. It has been two years.
Thank you for sharing your lovely walk.

Hi @iamraincrystal!
First of all, my humble apologies for only replying to your comment now! Somehow I have missed the notification to your comment. But, here I am...lol.
Yes, I totally get it that you would also appreciate a warm and sunny beach. I think that is what most people have in mind...is to go to the beach to relax and be carefree...just enjoying the beach and the sun.
It has been two years since you've been to the beach. Wow, especially living in the city...yes, that is a long time.
Do you have it your planning to take a break sometime soon?
Thank you so much for your comment, your curation of my post, and for sharing your thoughts with us. I really do appreciate it!
Alas, the never ending lockdown issue locally has made it a lot of hassle to travel out of town. Tests, quarantine, etc. The list goes on. They're probably killing us softly with all the restrictions. It does make me want to move out of the city. 😒😒 in due time...
Happy midweek!

Yes, we have been hit hard by this pandemic.
Are you still under heavy restrictions where you live?
I was never a city person to start off with, so I can fully understand when you say you want to move out of the city! I hope you would be able to do so soon!
