13th December 2022
I was in the West Kowloon MTR station last Sunday and looking for the exit to the Cultural District. I opted to exit in a different exit but it seemed to be the wrong one as I ended up walking along the Green Plaza up to the Sky Corridor. I passed by the area multiple times but have never been to the top of the Sky Corridor. I don't even know that a place called Sky Corridor exist until last Sunday. So it was like discovering a new place after getting lost.
This was the MTR exit I followed and it seemed new to me so I knew I was tracing the wrong way. The architecture looks stunning, isn't it? I braced myself for another new journey. As long as I was in a familiar place, I knew I won't go further and I could eventually trace the right path to the Cultural District.
I continued walking until I reached the outside and stumbled upon, yet another unfamiliar place. The alley seemed nostalgic with those stone walls covered with moss and creeping wild plants. The more I come across new places, the more excited I am to discover what lies ahead.
At the end of the alley is the green plaza and the way up to the Sky Corridor came into sight. I saw a few people going down and I got curious about what was up there so I opted to climb up the stairs.
Sky Corridor is located on top of the West Kowloon Railway Station which has the high-speed rail that connects Hong Kong and Guangzhou China. Some parts of the West Kowloon District around this railway station were still under development up until now.
I forgot to take a photo of the whole railway so I looked for the old photo I took before using my old phone. The railway has a unique architecture which has already received a few awards.
According to Wikipedia, the West Kowloon architecture won "Cityscape Awards for Architecture" in the Emerging Markets of Tourism, Travel & Transport Future Awards in 2010. It also won the "Best Future Project ─ Infrastructure" World Architecture Festival Awards in the same year. This station was opened just in 2015.
The Sky Corridor Sightseeing Deck on top is the best part of the railway station. This can even be a perfect place for some aerobic exercise to warm up the body, especially in this cold season.
The sightseeing deck offers a perfect spot for city landscape photography overlooking Victoria Harbor, and the city skyscrapers look spectacular from atop, especially at night.
The space on top is limited, but both the left and right side of Sky Corridor has a sightseeing deck. I wasn't sure though if I was in the right or left area, lol.
You can see some ongoing constructions from my backdrop. It seems like the government is transforming the place, not only into a Cultural District but also into a top urban tourist destination.
And there are more ongoing constructions on the other side of the district. Based on what I know, more museums are being built here.
This district has several notable buildings, museums like the M+, theatres like Xiqu Center, and other tourist attractions such as the Art Park and the popular Sky100 observation deck on the top floor of ICC, the tallest building in Hong Kong. The Other Shop and Curator Cafe, and The M+ Shop at the M+ Museum which I visited recently are also located in this district.
Aside from the Sky Corridor, the Green Plaza itself is also another tourist spot and a great place to unwind on holidays. It's actually spacious and there are parts where visitors could gather with their families or friends with a scenic view of West Kowloon and Victoria Harbor from afar.
After discovering the top of this railway station, I would definitely visit this again someday. The Sky Corridor is surely a perfect spot for watching fireworks and the symphony of lights in Victoria Harbor which usually played at 8 in the evening. And visitors can simply visit other attractions in this district after wandering around the plaza and sightseeing on the Sky Corridor.
