Historical introduction
Planning and preparatory work for the construction of the current breakwater began in 1872, and was completed in 1888
In memory of the historical merits in the development of the city, it was named, in honor of the Empress, Molo Maria Teresa
It was designed for the Hungarian administration by the Hungarian architect Antal Hajnal
The construction work was carried out by a Parisian railway construction company.
So, after the brief historical introduction of the famous Rijeka promenade walk called “Molo longo” or simply breakwater, I should probably speak a thing or two about the photos that I will post below.
My Wednesday promenade walk
As I started my walk at the above mentioned breakwater, I saw this ordinary seagull, and didn't hesitate to snap a photo.
Molo longo is the berthing place for all the fishing boats that bring fresh fish to Rijeka fish market every morning. It consists of trawlers and boats that catch mostly sardines and anchovies. Croatian fish is one of the best in the world, by quality standards.
On the contrary there are also some yachts and tourist boats berthed here, so it makes a great contrast for a regular human eye to see fishing boats berthed next to megayachts while walking on this charming promenade. This boat above is 92 meters long luxury yacht named "Royal Romance".
At first this seems as a damaged rope, but it is just an end of a tied knot that seems damaged. I thought it would be a good photo, so here it is.
Tourist boat that is going on a one week cruise of Adriatic sea, islands and historical towns. Tourists that come to visit Croatia enjoy this kind of trips because they could easily see our beautiful coast for a price that is acceptable for most.
Svetlana Despot's work was created in January 2020 as an imprint of the artist's personal inner state, and it happened that her thoughts, regarding the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, is more relevant now than then. Namely, the artist seemed to foresee a feeling of isolation, in which soon everyone found themselves. It consists of four states; Solitude, confession, freedom and hug. It is presented on the promenade walk.
After the opening of the Rijeka breakwater for citizens, a project for the renovation of old port cranes was launched at the initiative of the City of Rijeka. These are two semi-portal cranes manufactured by GANZ - Budapest. One crane was manufactured in 1957, and the other crane in 1948 and is no longer in operation. The project was implemented in cooperation with the City of Rijeka, the Port of Rijeka Authority and the Conservation Department.
Upon completion of the renovation, the cranes are equipped with reflectors that have the ability to create light in different colors and different intensities at night.
Sailing boat, with my birthplace in the background. City of Rijeka at its full glory. European capital of culture for the year 2020. The city is also famous for its sailing race called "Fiumanka"
Cranes in port of Rijeka.
The Port of Rijeka is a seaport in Croatia, located on the shores of the Kvarner Bay on the Adriatic.
The first records of the port date from 1281. It was the main port of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 19th century and early 20th century, the main port of Yugoslavia between World War II and 1991. Today, it is the largest port in Croatia with cargo sales of 11.2 million tons (2016), mainly oil, general cargo and bulk cargo.
People that are participating in a fishing contest. Unfortunately that meant that my path came to an end. Competition security didn't let me pass.
