A Quick Stroll in Manila Cathedral

Hello, Hivers! @lizhavesomefun is back with another story to unpack! Okay, so on my previous blog, I already shared my experience in Fort Santiago with you (you can read it here if you're interested 😊). Today, I will share how I spent the rest of my day during my visit to Intramuros.

So, as a recap to my previous blog, I went to Intramuros last year to visit some historical sites because it is one of my interests. After exiting Fort Santiago, my cousins and I decided to take a stroll headed to Manila Cathedral. As we arrived at the Plaza Roma in front of the church, we were greeted by an empty fountain. And behind stood the Manila Cathedral. It was as majestic as the pictures I've seen on the internet. The intricate architecture is just as beautiful, and its details are screaming stories of centuries past. Now, we have lots of churches here in Cebu, and each has its own beauty and significance. Still, the Cathedral just made me literally gape.

After taking in the sights for quite a while, we wandered over to the fountain (although there was no water running at that very moment) in front of the church. It was quite the perfect spot to take a picture with the Manila Cathedral as the background. The plaza was also the perfect spot to take a breather and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. It also has an open library called The Book Stop Project (correct me if I'm wrong, please), where you can take a book in exchange for a book. The plaza had this serene charm, with groups of people chatting, kids running around, and a few others just sitting quietly, soaking in the beauty of the place. And guess what? There are more guwardiya sibil here.

It was a shame that I didn't have any books with me at that time because I was so going to trade with their books here.)

After taking a lot of pictures by the fountain and after we relaxed for a bit, we decided it was time for some refreshments. As per my cousin's suggestions, we made our way to La Cathedral Café, which we had heard so much about. Their logo was especially eye-catching, and their corridor was adorned with flowers. As we entered their porch, we were told to line in queue first before we could really go inside and order; we didn't mind since we weren't in a hurry.

The interior had a warm and inviting ambiance, with rustic wooden furniture and vintage-inspired decor. The walls were adorned with huge curtains and there are also classic lanterns hanged with flowers. The chandeliers gave off a nostalgic charm that matched perfectly with Intramuros's historical feel. The lighting was soft and subtle—dim enough to feel intimate but bright enough to appreciate all the little details around you.

I particularly loved how the space felt like a blend of old and modern-world elegance and comfort. It was the kind of place where you could sit for hours, whether catching up with friends, reading a book, eating and sipping delicious foods and drinks, or just enjoying the vibe.

For the food and drinks, I went for the Salted Caramel frappe, which was absolutely satisfying. My cousin and her friends went for the other frappes. We also ordered a chocolate cake and a carrot cake. (They also have rice meals here!) Sipping on one while taking in the cozy surroundings was such a treat. The café felt like a little oasis in the heart of all the historical hustle and bustle of Intramuros.

So, while the rooftop may be the star of La Cathedral Café for many, I can confidently say the interior is just as charming (It's because the rooftop was already full by the time we went there. I heard the view there was beautiful as you can see the Cathedral and the plaza from up there). Still, the dining area is a perfect spot to recharge and enjoy a quiet moment amidst your Intramuros adventures.

After we finished up, we stepped back outside and waited for our Grab to arrive. It was the perfect way to wrap up our visit to the Manila Cathedral.

Owwww what a perfect stroll you had, @lizhavesomefun! 🥹🥹

Yes, it really was! 😅 The place was beautiful and the company made the stroll even better.🚶‍♀✨

I really enjoy wandering through these kinds of places. Besides the nostalgic scenery, it always brings to mind the book "I Love You Since 1892."

I feel you! Wandering through places like that really hits differently. And you're right, it’s totally giving ILYS 1892 vibes—had me channeling my inner Carmela too, hahaha.
