An Evening at the Mariinsky Theater

"No preamble today" — none

The day began with a leisurely stroll along the Griboyedov Canal, where the water mirrored the pastel facades of St. Petersburg’s historic buildings. My wife, Lyubov, and I had invited Svetlana, a long-time friend and native of the city, to join us for an evening at the Mariinsky Theater. The air was crisp, and the streets bustled with a lively energy that seemed to promise a memorable night.

As we approached the theater, the sight of the enormous crowd gathered at the entrance made us pause. Visitors from around the world were milling about, their conversations a symphony of languages—English, French, German, and others we couldn’t quite place. The Mariinsky’s grand façade loomed above the throng, a majestic reminder of its storied past.

Once inside, we were struck by the theater’s awe-inspiring interior. Every detail seemed steeped in history, from the gilded railings to the soaring ceilings adorned with intricate frescoes. In the foyer, we wandered among displays of costumes and artifacts from past productions, each piece telling a story of artistry and tradition. Svetlana pointed out a particularly elaborate dress from the early 20th century, her voice tinged with pride as she recounted its origins.

As we entered the main hall, the grandeur of the space took our breath away. The chandelier glittered like a constellation, casting a warm glow over the plush velvet seats and gold-leafed decor. The stage, framed by an ornate proscenium, seemed to radiate anticipation. It felt as though the very walls of the Mariinsky carried the echoes of centuries of performances.

When the curtains rose on Giselle, the magic began. The dancers moved with a grace and precision that seemed almost otherworldly, their movements telling a story of love and betrayal with an emotional depth that drew us in completely. The music, performed live by the Mariinsky Orchestra, added a layer of richness that heightened every moment.

At intermission, we joined the crowd in the search for the buffet. The line snaked through the corridors, and the aroma of champagne and hors d’oeuvres teased us as we waited. Finally, we reached the counter and ordered a modest selection: two glasses of champagne and a trio of small sandwiches. The prices were jaw-dropping, but we toasted to the occasion, laughing at the extravagance. The bubbly effervescence and simple snacks felt luxurious in the setting, adding a touch of indulgence to the evening.

Returning to our seats, we felt a renewed sense of wonder as the second act began. The ethereal beauty of the Wilis and the emotional crescendo of Giselle’s story left us deeply moved. By the time the final curtain fell, we were all silent, each lost in our own thoughts, overwhelmed by the artistry we had just witnessed.

As we stepped out into the cool night air, the lights of the theater glowed behind us, a beacon of culture and history. Svetlana suggested a walk to soak in the atmosphere, and we gladly agreed. The evening had been a perfect blend of beauty, emotion, and connection—a day that would linger in our memories long after we returned home...

That,s all for today.

Sincerely yours
