A few days ago, I decided to take a walk through one of the streets of Vedado, an emblematic and vibrant neighborhood in Havana. My tour was not only an opportunity to enjoy the architecture and ambiance of the place, but it also became a deep reflection on recycling and the transformation of what we consider waste. As I walked around, I encountered an authentic festival of color and joy that was born out of creativity and community collaboration.
The first impression I got from this walk was a remarkable contrast: on the one hand, some corners were full of waste that degraded the landscape, on the other hand, this street 21 between 8 and 10, there were spaces decorated with impressive art.
However, I was surprised to see how this local artist had taken the initiative to transform those items that many considered ugly or useless into works of art. I knew that behind each piece was a story, a creative process that reimagined what was initially seen as trash.
As I approached, I had the good fortune to talk with the artist, William Agüero, who told me that his motivation came from the sadness he felt at seeing such a beautiful place being filled with debris.
His desire to beautify his community led him to call on his neighbors and encourage them to participate in this project. What began as a simple idea turned into a true collective work where everyone contributed to picking up trash and repairing the environment.
The artist shared with me his experience in this community project, it was a work in which the whole community was involved, everyone worked shoulder to shoulder, recycling plastics, metals and other materials, the sense of collaboration was palpable in the air.
Everyone contributed their efforts and creativity, which allowed the block to be reborn as a vibrant and joyful space.
Knowing that families worked together, from the youngest to the oldest, filled me with hope and inspiration. It was a poignant reminder that when we come together for a common goal, we can make a significant difference.
The most striking thing was to observe how those objects that were once considered waste, now adorned the walls, benches and gardens. Each piece was a testimony of transformation and dedication.
What was once destined to be discarded became art, a symbol of what is possible when love and effort are put into a community project.
The project in Vedado is a clear and admirable example that should inspire other neighborhoods and localities in the country. At the end of my walk, I took with me not only beautiful and colorful memories, but also the firm conviction that recycling and collaboration can bring joy to our communities.
Beauty is not always in the new and polished; sometimes it is in the ability to reinvent ourselves and give a second life to what we no longer believe to be useful.
This trip taught me that, with a little imagination and collective effort, we can transform our environment and create spaces full of life and color.

Hace algunos días, decidí dar un paseo por una de las calles del Vedado, un barrio emblemático y vibrante de La Habana. Sin embargo, me sorprendió ver cómo este artista local había tomado la iniciativa de transformar esos elementos que muchos consideraban feos o inútiles en obras de arte. Supe que detrás de cada pieza había una historia, un proceso creativo que reimaginaba lo que inicialmente se veía como basura.
Al acercarme, tuve la fortuna de conversar con el artista, William Agüero, quién me contó que su motivación surgió de la tristeza que sentía al ver cómo un lugar tan bonito se llenaba de desechos.
Su deseo de embellecer su comunidad lo llevó a convocar a los vecinos y animarlos a participar en este proyecto. Lo que comenzó como una simple idea se transformó en una verdadera obra colectiva donde todos contribuían a recoger basura y a reparar el entorno.
El artista me trasmitió su experiencia en este Proyecto comunitario, fue un trabajo en que toda la comunidad se involucró todos trabajaron hombro a hombro, reciclando plásticos, metales y otros materiales, el sentido de colaboración se palpaba en el aire.
Cada uno contribuyó con su esfuerzo y su creatividad, lo que permitió que la cuadra renaciera como un espacio vibrante y alegre.
Saber que las familias trabajaron juntas, desde los más pequeños hasta los más grandes, me llenó de esperanza e inspiración. Fue un conmovedor recordatorio de que, cuando nos unimos por un objetivo común, podemos lograr cambios significativos.
Lo más impactante fue observar cómo aquellos objetos que antes eran considerados residuos, ahora adornaban las paredes, los bancos y los jardines. Cada pieza era un testimonio de transformación y dedicación.
Aquello que una vez estuvo destinado a ser desechado se convertía en arte, en un símbolo de lo que es posible cuando se pone amor y esfuerzo en un proyecto comunitario.
El proyecto en el Vedado es un ejemplo claro y digno de admirar que debería inspirar a otros barrios y localidades del país. Al finalizar mi paseo, no solo llevé conmigo recuerdos hermosos y coloridos, sino también la firme convicción de que el reciclaje y la colaboración pueden traer alegrías a nuestras comunidades.
La belleza no siempre está en lo nuevo y lo pulido; a veces, se encuentra en la capacidad de reinventarnos y darle una segunda vida a lo que ya no creemos útil.
Este viaje me enseñó que, con un poco de imaginación y esfuerzo colectivo, podemos transformar nuestro entorno y crear espacios llenos de vida y color.
