Or more specifically, to the La Crosse River. After visiting the hill known locally as "Indian Hill" a few weeks ago (I know, likely not politically correct), I did some more research on the area with my Newspapers.com. Lo and behold, as history would tell me, it turns out my dad's uncle found a Winnebago skeleton on March 10, 1934, in the vicinity of the area above. So, I thought to myself, what better walk for #wednesdaywalk than to revisit the area I used to run around with when I was a young boy. As always, I meant no disrespect to the land and the history that existed in the area...and always, this is an entry an entry for the #wednesdaywalk challenge hosted by @tattoodjay.
To get to the area, you have to use an old sandy trail that has been there for at least 40 plus years.
Once to the bottom, the marshlands open up to the north:
The south of the trail is crook in what is known as the La Crosse River. We were always told to stay out the river due to the current and number of downed trees in this waterway, but today, it's a popular kayak route. No kayaks seen today, however.
No kayaks, but plenty of blue skies, puffy clouds, freshwater, and browning trees. I even found a wildflower or two on the walk back to the top of the hill.
It's easy to see why Buffalo Bill Cody, back in "the day", wanted to make this entire area a historic preservation site. What I saw today is probably only a fraction of the beauty this area once was when the local Native American tribes made this site a meeting place for peace and business.
There is some talk of creating a heritage center here at some point in the future, but I haven't noticed much progess in that respect. Hopefully, someday that happens.
Whew! I threw a lot in on this walk today; again, I'm loving the mix of history and the walk itself to share with everyone on Hive. Until next week, have a wonderful rest of the week!
Nice place to walk beautiful nature atmosphere, thank you
What a beautiful area fir a walk I do love trails that pass by water
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)
I'm happy to know! Looking forward to sharing more history walks when possible, too - it's fun to research a spot ahead of time!
I look forward to reading them

I really enjoyed your walk. I wish I'd enjoyed history at school like I do now. I blame the teacher for being boring!
I know! I wasn't much of a history buff either, but as I've gotten older, I have learned to appreciate local history so much more. It's fun to dig into something like an area or location with my Newspapers com account
I think it's because we don't have to do it, we choose to do it. Better late than never. 🙂
Awesome walk man. Some great pics! It’s crazy how to fall is coming a bit late this year for whatever reason. I expected the trees to look more colorful! Thankfully it means that the weather is a bit friendlier for outdoor stuff still so that’s good.
Love adding some history to the mix on the walks!
Yeah, I need it...I need a break from all the Splinterlands stuff on my mind! It's ridiculous!!
Yeah no kidding lol
