Wednesday Walk: Historic Home Tour

in Wednesday Walk2 months ago (edited)

For my birthday celebration this year I invited my friends to an Indian Buffet and then to experience the historic home tour in Mesa.

I live in Mesa, Arizona, a city very close to the capital of Phoenix. It is a large city and was according to Wikipedia its history dates back 2000 years to the arrival of the Hohokam people and in 1878 it was made a city.

Each year the city asks residents in the historic neighborhoods if they would like to be a part of the tour. The houses on this tour were built in the late 1800s, the early 1900s and the 1940s and 1950s were in the Evergreen district of the city. There were a lot of beautiful trees in this part of town.

The weather was amazing (in the 60s) as me and my friends walked through this old part of Mesa together.

House 1

Let's start with the oldest home. This house was built in the late 1800s. It has high ceilings and a great wrap around porch.

House 2

Each year they pick a different historic area and yet each year they have two houses close to the city center that are always on the tour. I am so glad, they are some of my very favorites! I mean look at this tin ceiling!

And the gorgeous Kitchen. For those that know me well, you know how much I love glass. This house had wonderful glass.

I got a lot of bathroom pictures. I will have to do a post in @livinguktaiwan's Loo community.

The outside area was great too. And it had a carriage house that was converted into a bar area and an apartment.

House 3

This house was stunning, so minimalist and clean.

It also had a carriage house that was converted into a bar area.

And a pool area

House 4

The person that decorated this house really likes black, white and purple. And while I didn't get a picture there was a chandelier in the bathroom.

House 5

I liked the mid century vibe in this house, especially the couch.

House 6

The part I liked most about this house is the garden. It was really incredible. I live a few miles away and my garden doesn't look like this.

House 7

This house was the one that felt the most like stepping back in time. Look at that great original colored tile!

There is also a big Arizona room. These are rooms that are built on the house and screened in so that there is flow and people can sleep in them in the summer months, before air conditioning.

I had to get a picture of the beautiful orange tree. It is citrus season right now so I have been picking and juicing a lot of oranges from my friend's trees. Fresh squeezed orange juice is sooo good.

House 8

This was a beautiful house and the outside living space was incredible. I want to go back and sit and eat there.

One thing that I found fascinating is that some of these houses are very ordinary outside and you step inside and see the personality and beautiful inside. Just like people.

Here is a picture of all of us at lunch before the tour. It was an incredible day!

Pretty cool they open up their houses! I love looking at other people's decor although my feng shui OCD mind will definitely work overtime. I'm with you on the garden! Amazing. And we have been rearranging a d restructuring our garden to fit another bed and I have room for two more fruit trees... Definitely a nashi but might also do an orange.

Hello! That garden is inspirational I think I need to go back to raised beds. That is so cool that you have fruit trees too.

I would probably not have joined the Indian Meal, a pet peeve of my wifes is I dont like Indian, she loves it but then again she grew up in India, she cannot understand how i lived and worked in India and Pakistan for three years and never got a taste for Indian LOL

and I have heard of Mesa, it was one place I was looking into when we were discussing where to Move when I retired, but decided to move here to MA close to family

that is so cool they have those tours, I love when cities embrace there history

Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk and have a good day

It really is so cool when cities embrace and show their history in ways that are fun accessible. It is one of my favorite activities I look forward to most each year. Glad you are close to family. If you come visit Mesa let me know.

Yes familyis important, with my wifes and my surguries since we moved here and the help they gave us we sure made the right choice plus always good to spend time with family every fRIDAY AFTERNOON WE HAVE THE GRANDKIDS :)

if i EVER MAKE IT THAT WAY FOR SURE i WILL LET YOU KNOW

How is your wife doing these days?

Oops soryr for the caps i just noticed that

She is doign better these days sleepign better and apart from an achy back is good

I just thought you were really excited to meet me...the all caps :) That is so good to hear about your wife. If you want a break from the cold winters this is the place to come.

OHh I have to admit over the winter months we sometimes wish we had moved to a place that doesnt get so cold lOL

Wow, so many exciting details! Amazing tour. I can't pick up one favorite 😋
I wonder ... where are all residents of these houses?

Good question. Some of the residents were there and that was fun to talk to them. Some were gone and there were volunteers that told us about the house and answered questions. The tours is from 12-5pm.

I just imagined myself in the place of the residents. Every day you have to keep the house perfectly clean and tidy. And at the same time, you know, they live there. 🙂

Luckily it is only for a few hours once a year, so not too bad.

Oh, once a year. It's quite bearable then 😀 Such an interesting custom.

Your birthday is celebrated in a wonderful way, enjoy yourself like this forever as long as you live. Every house is beautiful, the first house was built in 1800, very old. Visiting such a house gives a strange beautiful feeling. Every house is beautiful in its own way. This was a beautiful plan to celebrate the birthday, I can't help but admire it.
