Wednesday Walk: Mount Vernon

in Wednesday Walk2 years ago

I recently posted George Washington's Mount Vernon which I showed the inside of the house.

Now I would like to take you on a walk around the outside.

Gardens

I went at the end of April and it was a wonderful spring day and the gardens were beautiful.

The gardeners even got creative and spelled out George Washington with the vegetables!

The upper (formal) garden

The lower (kitchen) garden

The most interesting thing was the use of the apple and other fruit trees as an organic fence in the garden.

The fruit garden and nursery

Out buildings

I took pictures of a few of the buildings including the stable, kitchen and smokehouse.

Potomac River

It is a beautiful mansion overlooking the Potomac River.

The grounds

Here is a map of the property. It is 500 acres (200 ha).

So many paths!

After taking a tour of the house I walked around for a couple of hours and saw the dock, the grave sites and the animals.

Burial area

Both the Washington's and slaves had burial areas in close proximity.

George and Martha's tomb

Slave memorial and graves

The dock

It is a working dock with boats leaving on regular basis.

They also have benches by the beach if you want to relax next to the water.

The animals

I had to stop and get a picture of the black faced sheep. They were my mom's favorite!

It was a gorgeous spring day to see this historic home and plantation.

Beautiful shots. I have vistited Mt Vernon but years ago. The view of the Potomac is awesome. The first shot of the house is spectacular. I really like the fruit trees trained like the fence 🙂

thanks so much @steven-patrick. IT was so great to have time to really walk around the grounds. Before I went to the house and briefly saw the grounds.

Amazing place and your pictures just wonderful!
I would never had so tidy gardens but that doesn't stop me from admiring them :)
You could have made a lovely #gardenjournal post out of it too!

Thanks Stefanos! That is a good idea, there were lots of gardens in this post.

What a lovely #WednesdayWalk! I do like that organic fence that they did there. Everything in the property are an interest in their own way.
