Wednesday Walk: National Arboretum azalea collections

in Wednesday Walk3 years ago (edited)

One of my favorite walks on my trip to DC was in the National Arboretum azalea collections. The National Arboretum is 446 acres (1.80km2) in North East DC. It is so big that that we mostly drove around it. When I saw the azalea collection we had to stop.

It was amazing!

I was in DC at just the right time, late April. So many flowers were in bloom.

This area is actually the combination of three collections has thousands of azaleas covering the hillside. The southern slope is full of flowers that one of the directors, Benjamin Y. Morrison, breed and are modern hybrids. The middle section was completed in 1952 and has Glenn Dale azalea hybrids. The north garden is the the Frederic P. Lee Garden. It was dedicated in 1971 and has late blooming azaleas.

For those that know about azaleas there are Gable, Robin Hill, Kurume, North Tisbury, Back Acres, and Aromi azaleas, Rhododendron kiusianum selections, and many others.

Here we have Moana showing us the way up the trail. There are lots of great trails throughout the collection.

I really liked the look of azaleas when they are budding.

Cute Moana wanting to wear the azaleas.

So many colors

There is even a pond to play in and find lots of frogs.

Have a super great Wednesday!

Oh my goodness - the colors are INCREDIBLE! Your photos are gorgeous. I have a trip to DC planned for fall and may put the National Arboretum on my list for that trip!

Yes, do put it on your list and the other place that was incredible that I visited for the first time is Hillwood Estate. I am going to do a post about it soon. I also started a collection of Places to visit in and around DC. It might give you some more ideas.

They are amazing to see. Would love to visit this place one day. But I did just now with you.
Thanks so much @sjarvie5 for sharing all these wonderful photographs with us.
I will save the place on Google maps to visit one day. 👋🏻😁
