I recently read in one blog a flood of strong emotions about a walk around Kanonersky Island. The author complained that he had hoped to get to the park and walk along neat well-maintained paths, but no matter how many times he wandered in different directions, he could not find a well-organised park. Well, he had fallen victim to a misconception - and also to the not very conscientious work of cartographers. On one online map, part of the island is indeed labelled as a park. But this is a mistake; the correct word would be "protected natural area".
However, there is a small landscaped garden on the island. I started my walk in this very place, but I didn't stay there for a long time. I stopped only to swing on a swing for a few minutes. These swings look unusual and seem to have been made and installed by one of the islanders. They are set at the edge of the landscaped area, and these swings offer a beautiful view of the bay.
But my main goal was to walk along the country road that stretches along the shore of the Gulf of Finland. Kanonersky Island has an elongated shape. The part of the island that is closer to the city is built up with residential houses, but the other half of the island is a piece of almost untouched nature. For a long time the island was a difficult place to access, few inhabitants reached their homes by ferry or boat. Therefore, the far side of the island remained untouched and became a resting place for migratory birds.
After the island was connected to the city by a tunnel, there were plans for further development and improvement of the territory, but after an expert review, it was decided to preserve this natural oasis. There are no particularly valuable tree species here, the main vegetation is low-growing deciduous trees and bushes, but birds like this nature very much. And me too:)
There are almost no people in my photos - and it is indeed quite a secluded place. Not enough to feel universally lonely, but enough to walk quietly without manoeuvring amongst passers-by. There were a few people walking along the beach, but I only met two or three people on the upper road the whole time I walked there. But there was plenty of beautiful scenery, fresh air and bright autumn colours.
