Hello friends, I'm glad to welcome you all during my Wednesday Walk!
My walk started from the Gorkovskaya metro station. I did not come by subway, but by streetcar, and the subway will not play any role in my further narrative, but it's the most convenient reference point from which to begin my story. On the way I was looking out the window and noticed an interesting design of the wall of one of the houses. So first I went to that house and took some photos.
This composition on the blank wall of the apartment building is a monument to the women who fought in the air defense forces during World War II. Women and teenagers were on duty on rooftops during air raids to drop incendiary bombs and put out the fires that were starting.
The monument was created in 2002. The sculptor Lev Smorgon and the architect Igor Matveev worked on the monument.
On the wall of the neighboring house I noticed another memorial sign. "Society of Assistance to Defense, Aviation and Chemical Construction" had been placing plaques on the buildings "Strengthening the Defense of the USSR" since 1937.
I decided to turn into the courtyards, hoping to come across something interesting. Immediately I came across a very lyrical picture, made on the plywood of a boarded-up window.
In the second courtyard there was an old service building. What caught my attention was the inscription "Newspaper" and a blue arrow. I went closer to get a look at the mailbox, but I couldn't find it. It looked like the mail had to be shoved into a slot on the door.
I turned through the next door and suddenly found myself in the back of a movie studio. The old license plate of one of Moscow's streets is often used in movies and TV series.
When I reached the embankment of the Karpovka River, dusk was already beginning to fall. The Karpovka River is one of the branches of the Neva. On the embankment is located the Orthodox Convent of St. John. The building of the monastery in the Byzantine style was built by architect Nikonov in 1900-1902.
