I began my walk on Vasilevsky Island near the monument to Mikhail Lomonosov, near St. Petersburg University. Along the Neva embankment, I walked in the direction of small streets and alleys that seem to hide the 18th century - in dusky back alleys, old sidewalks, and miraculously preserved architectural details.
Shall we synchronize our watches? This is the house on the corner of the Neva embankment and the Kadet line. You can see the sundial no matter which street you go down, there are clocks on both walls, but I think only the ones on the Kadet Line side show the correct time.
The Neva embankment is lively and noisy, with lots of people and cars, but if you turn onto the side streets, all this bustle remains far, far away, in quiet alleys cats basking in the sun and children playing ball.
Here you can see old slabs of diabase instead of asphalt, in my childhood days diabase was still quite widespread, but now it is almost nowhere to be seen. As well as wooden gates - it is a rare find.
On the wall nearby is a quote introducing passersby to a gem of philosophical thought from the East. "Happiness is not unhappiness," so said Confucius. I'm not very sure of the accuracy of the translation:)
The next gate is not wooden but iron, but it is hardly much younger. Layers of paint tell the story of these gates like the annual rings of a tree.
I go on to visit an old wooden house. This one has been boarded up for years and its future fate is unknown. It is the most ordinary house, without impressive details and features, its value is that it reminds of the time when these streets were built with wooden structures.
I found an old photograph of this street. A piece of this house can be seen in the far part of the frame, on the left. The houses in the center and on the right were demolished long ago, and there are now stone buildings in their place.
I turned into the yards, looking for details, and found several drawings: a strange millipede in a cold corner of the yard, where the sun doesn't look to melt the ice, a cheerful toast, and a blue fox.
