Wednesday walk by a frozen lake

Hello, friends! Over the weekend, my family and I visited my mother-in-law in the town of Yavoriv, my wife's small hometown. We went there to celebrate my wife's postponed birthday with her family. Her mother, brother, and aunt joined the celebration. We had already marked the occasion in a small family circle back in mid-February, but due to everyone being sick, the larger gathering had to be delayed. While my wife was preparing something delicious for the festive table, I took the kids—our son and his cousin, my wife's brother's daughter—for a walk. We headed to a playground in the city center and stopped by one of the many ponds near Yavoriv. These ponds are used for fish farming, but the water is so clean that people even swim there in the summer, despite it being technically prohibited. Thanks to the sandy soil, the water remains crystal clear, though at the moment, this isn't visible as the surface is still covered with ice from February's frosts. In the photos, you can also see a water sluice, which is used to drain the pond when fish need to be harvested or the pond needs cleaning.	Привіт, друзі! На святкування приїхали її мама, брат і тітка. У вузькому сімейному колі ми вже відзначали цю подію раніше — майже в середині лютого, але через хвороби решти учасників велике святкування довелося відкласти. Поки дружина готувала щось смачненьке до святкового столу, я пішов на прогулянку з дітьми — нашим сином і його двоюрідною сестрою, донькою брата дружини. Ми вирушили до дитячого майданчика в центрі міста, а дорогою підійшли до одного з численних ставків, які розташовані біля Яворова. У цих ставках вирощують рибу, проте вони настільки чисті, що влітку там навіть купаються люди, хоч це формально заборонено. Завдяки піщаним ґрунтам вода в ставках прозора, але зараз це побачити звісно не можливо, бо вода ще досі вкрита кригою після лютневих морозів. Також на світлинах видно шлюз для спуску води — його використовують, коли потрібно виловити рибу або очистити ставок.

Swans can often be seen on this pond. In previous years, a pair of them even raised an entire brood here. At first, the tiny cygnets swam in a small group behind the two adult birds, then they grew and turned into gray, unremarkable juveniles. Only later did they transform into a flock of graceful, pure white swans. When we drove to Yavoriv the day before, we saw a pair of swans walking on the ice from the car window. However, when we visited the pond with the children the next day, the swans were nowhere to be seen. They had probably hidden in the reeds, where there were likely some unfrozen patches of water. Judging by the melting ice near the shore, this seemed quite possible. The sun had started warming things up, but the ice was still strong enough to support a person’s weight. We even noticed a fisherman who had drilled holes in the ice and was engaged in winter fishing. However, this is quite a dangerous activity, especially when the ice begins to thaw. News reports often tell of fishermen who have fallen through the ice, and even worse—children who run onto the frozen surface without realizing the danger. Sadly, such incidents sometimes end in tragedy.	На цьому ставку часто можна помітити лебедів. Минулими роками тут одна пара вивела цілий виводок. Спочатку маленькі лебедята плавали зграйкою за двома дорослими птахами, потім підросли й стали схожими не на прекрасних білих лебедів, а на сірих, непоказних пташенят. І лише згодом на воді з'явилося близько десятка великих, граційних білих лебедів. Коли ми їхали до Яворова напередодні, то з вікна машини бачили пару лебедів, які гуляли по кризі. Проте, коли наступного дня ми прийшли з дітьми до ставка, птахів уже не було видно. Можливо, вони сховалися в очереті, де, ймовірно, є незамерзлі ділянки води. Судячи з того, що біля самого берега вже почала танути крига, це цілком можливо. Сонечко трохи пригрівало, але лід усе ще залишався достатньо міцним, щоб витримати вагу людини. Ми навіть помітили рибалку, який висвердлив лунки й займався зимовою риболовлею. Хоча таке заняття досить небезпечне, особливо в періоди, коли лід починає танути. Часто у засобах масової інформації можна побачити повідомлення про рибалок, які провалилися під лід, а ще страшніше — про дітей, що вибігли на кригу, не усвідомлюючи ризику. І, на жаль, іноді такі випадки закінчуються трагічно.
