Not many locations could be more laidback and unpretentious than the South Coast of Kwazulu Natal, with an abundance of holiday destinations.
We've been going that way from childhood days, so have many happy memories of carefree days spent on the beach exploring the rocks at low tide, picking up sea shells, sunbathing (yep, no awareness of skin cancer back then) and swimming all day long, floating on the rolling waves.
A visit down south just ain't the same without making a pit stop at The Cow Shed Coffee & Pottery Shop just off the highway, a little north of the seaside village of Port Edward, in Mattson Square.
This small centre is situated on a coffee farm, has a number of real arty shops, a fabulous outdoor play area for kids and a quaint coffee shop, where the best cappuccinos are served.
The most colourful, stunning hand-painted pottery can be bought here, an absolute feast for the eye! The guinea fowl still is my favourite design, a popular range that's been going for a good couple of years so I get to buy replacements every time we go.
Paintings by local artists are also displayed and for sale.
I just love the quirky decor and hand-painted tables at this coffee shop that not only serves the best coffee, but also has a really nice menu of light eats.
I was lucky that it was a slow morning, so could take photos of a couple of empty tables.
Some diners waiting for their order with masks at half mast:)
Nothing like beautiful choc-chip cupcakes topped with fresh cream, chocolate flakes and a cherry on top to go with those cappuccinos, not so!
Could not resist sharing one of my favourite mugs given by a life-long friend; ain't that saying true!
We were told that the best burgers are served at a place down in Glenmore Beach, a little further north of Port Edward; and when we got there, I was really dubious as the Dolphin Pub & Grill looked like just another local hangout where people only come to get sozzled, but a VERY pleasant surprise awaited us; service was great and the burgers were amazing as was the pizza!
Another Kwazulu Natal favourite is a Bunny Chow - a hollowed out half loaf of bread filled with a curry, Mutton Curry in this instance.
I will end off with a look at some of the food us South Africans would typically prepare when we're holidaying; mostly cooked on the BRAAI (BBQ).
MY FOOD DICTIONARY
Some of these words will not be known to you and will not be found in the English dictionary, but I will explain:
- Braai - a South African word for Barbeque; WE love braaing!
- Roosterkoek - Kind of a bread bun cooked on a grid over the barbeque.
- Phutu - A traditional Zulu dish made with maize meal; has a crumbly texture.
- Chakalaka - A spicy indigenous dish made with sauteed diced Tomatoes, diced Onions, grated Carrots, Baked beans, Garlic & Ginger as well as Chilli spices, served on phutu.
- Braai Broodjies - Cheese, Tomato & Onion Toasted Sandwiches cooked on the Barbeque
- Boerewors - a spicy South African sausage with strong notes of cloves, coriander and nutmeg.
- Braai Pie - Simply a pie baked on a grid over the Barbeque
I hope you enjoyed this journey down south and a look at typical food we would enjoy while holidaying.

This one reminds me of a few things. All the coastal cities and their beachy vibes make for some good food. And this was kinda reminiscent of fff.
I miss those crazy Food Fight Fridays, was always great being able to let off steam and write up a fun blog with food as the main theme!
Another excellent outing with you Lizelle finding places to enjoy a quiet meal and different scenery. Most definitely a winner with the decor inside, bright artwork drawing ones surroundings onto ceramic or cloth, even table tops, always enjoyable to see.

Tip
It really is such a lovely place, laidback and so nice seeing all the artwork everywhere! We are blessed with a beautiful country indeed, it's just sad to see how some people are intent on destroying what we have!
We're enjoying the cooler weather but the rain can stop now, everything is soaked here and growing before one's eyes:)
It is heartbreaking to watch the destruction by people in their own land, life carries on... not so?
South Coast has some lovely nooks and crannies to explore, sadly one needs to keep to the mainstream areas the older you get, not like times gone when you could move more freely.
Loving the cooler wet weather, dread to think of what is to come once the sun does arrive, have a wonderful weekend Lizelle.
Everything is certainly going to start steaming once the sun comes out in full force!
Yes it is sad that one has to be careful now about moving around.
Not looking forward to those hot summer days, I also prefer winter time, Durban winter though:)
Have a lovely weekend further Joan.
Bathing dogs today with the sun showing, then they too will be more comfortable for another month or so.
Summer I hide, no question about it our Durban winter is most definitely the best anyone can wish for. Have a lovely Sunday Lizelle.

Wow! Those were mouth-watering food! 😍🤤 And the art are amazing! 😍😍😍
The artwork is really nice, I had taken many photos of the fabulous pottery on a previous visit but at that stage was saving to my hard drive and the laptop was stolen, so I lost some valuable info; yep, had not done a backup for some time!
Thank you so very much @ackhoo and @qurator, really appreciate your curation!
I love the paintings on the table top, and the food of course!!!
Those painted tables are a real heart warming touch, adds to the atmosphere! I'm not sure what's best, the coffee or the food?
