Hello Captains!
Today our Second Planetary Challenge came to an end. We could go on and on about how amazed we are by all the great contributions we got again. But why do all that writing when a meme is all we need? (Credits to @palasatenea)
So with that out of the way, let's talk about the next steps!
We had pilots go for each of the three possible destinations. In the coming days, you'll learn about each destinations secrets and the events unfolding there. Each day, we'll cover another 15 days worth of colonization time, describe what's happening where and have a look at how each colony is faring with these events.
Our primary goal here is to give each colony a fighting chance and describe why each crew fails or succeeds with any given challenge. This way we hope to keep it both fair and interesting for you guys to follow.
Once Colonization starts, there will be a lot of factors and values that will determine the success or failure of your colony. To make it more easy to follow (and obviously more manageable for us) we'll do with a single value called Colony Health for the contest. Your colony starts with a value of 100 and whenever something bad happens to you, you'll lose some of your Colony Health. Once it hits zero it will be game over for you and your colony will be removed from the contest.
Please note that these events are already predetermined, so it will play out more or less the same for everybody that chose the same destination. There are 3 possible endings to any encounter:
- You fail (in parts) and take (some) damage to your Colony Health
- You succeed and take no damage
- You have the perfect solution to the encounter and gain some additional Colony Health
We'll send out rewards for each tier as you reach it. All colonies that make it to the end will then be compared with each other and the ones with the most Colony Health remaining for each location and overall will earn additional rewards.
So lets see how the journey for each of the possible location begins!
The Ocean World
The Ocean World looked like the perfect candidate for a temporary colony. With its lush climate and a breathable atmosphere, it seemed to be the obvious choice to wait out the arrival of the Colombus. Out of the possible islands, the largest one (which still was rather small) was chosen for landing.
While picking the landing site was rather easy, actually getting the Baldie on the ground was not. As an interstellar shuttle, it was never designed to land on a planet without any guiding system. To add insult to injury, sudden gusts of wind made the autopilot refuse to work. If you wanted to make it to the surface alive you had to land the Shuttle yourself...
@proto26: You take a quick look around, it seems nobody in your crew has ever piloted a space ship beyond just setting the coordinates for the autopilot. After some heated discussion, your Tech Expert takes over the steering. At first it seems to be going pretty smooth, but the closer you get to the surface, the harder it gets to control the shuttle. After another unexpected gust of wind he finally loses control and the Baldie crashes uncontrolled onto the island.
Many components get damaged and several crew members hurt during the impact, but luckily you have a Tech Expert to fix some of the damage as well as a Space Surgeon to tend to your crews injuries. It will take some days to get everything back up and running but nothing seems to be beyond repair or healing.
Result of Encounter:
- Crash-landed: 50 damage
- Repairs to the shuttle: Colony Health + 15
- Medical treatment: Colony Health + 10
- Colony Health remaining: 75
@blockmonster: You don't have a space pilot with you, but luckily Oksana has seen her share of piloting all kinds of planetary vehicles. How hard can it be to land a shuttle? Without giving it much thought, she takes the steering and starts the descend. The landing is a little rough and in the end, the Baldie grazes some rocks before finally coming to a halt.
The damage to the shuttle is minor and no crew got hurt. You don't have anyone capable of repairing the damage, so you will just have to live with it.
Result of Encounter:
- Grazed some rocks: 10 damage
- Colony Health remaining: 90
@apprentice001: You take a quick look around, it seems nobody in your crew has ever piloted a space ship beyond just setting the coordinates for the autopilot. After some heated discussion, Captain Cranium takes over the steering himself. At first it seems to be going pretty smooth, but the closer you get to the surface, the harder it gets to control the shuttle. After another unexpected gust of wind he finally loses control and the Baldie crashes uncontrolled onto the island.
Many components get damaged and several crew members hurt during the impact. You don't have anyone capable of repairing the damage, so you will just have to live with it. Thanks to Eliza and your Medical Bay, the injuries won't be an issue, though. After some days, everybody will be healthy again. Still, the damage to your shuttle and some of the equipment seems to be severe.
Result of Encounter:
- Crash-landed: 50 damage
- Medical treatment with Medical Bay: Colony Health + 20
- Colony Health remaining: 70

@raudell: Landing on a lovely planet with the engine intact and without being shot at? To Tyron this seems to be almost too easy. The landing process is smooth and simple and before you know it the Baldie reaches the ground without any issues. After a final check of your systems, you start to unpack your cargo and to install your Prefabs.
Result of Encounter:
- No damage taken - well done Captain!
- Colony Health remaining: 100
The Moon
The moon, while devoid of any atmosphere, still seemed like a good place to hide from the aliens until the Colombus could come and pick you up again. There was something about these alien ruins that you simply could not resist. What was their story? Who where these aliens? You had to find out. Besides, maybe you would find additional resources there, maybe even some alien technology to aid your struggle for survival?
Landing on the moon should have been a routine job for the autopilot. After you checked for some appropriate coordinates close to the northern pole, you started your decent. Suddenly, the alarm went off. Sir, we have an unidentified missile incoming! It wasn't clear where the warhead was coming from, but you didn't have the time to think about that either, it was only a matter of seconds until you'd get hit...
@slabakbg: In a moment of panic everybody is screaming at each other. Your Battle-Trained Socialite is the first to come to mind again. She manages to launch a decoy that deflects the missile in the last second.
You still have no idea where that rocket came from, so you decide to keep a low profile for some days and let the auto pilot bring you down close but not too close to the alien ruins.
Result of Encounter:
- No damage taken - well done Captain!
- Colony Health remaining: 100
@palasatenea: In a moment of panic everybody is screaming at each other. Ayumi is the first to come to mind again.
@nockzonk: While everybody else was still in panic, Admiral Valro was already on top of it. Countermeasures launched... Hostile warhead destroyed...detecting launch site...setting target...fire...launch site has been destroyed!. He makes it sound like he's been doing that a thousand times already.
With the immediate threat neutralized, you set down close but not too close to the alien ruins. Whoever the attacker was, your quick response made sure that they'll think twice before going after you again. Unsure whether this was the only hostile installation or not, you decide to keep a low profile for some days.
Result of Encounter:
- No damage taken - well done Captain!
- Hostiles taken care off: Colony Health + 5
- Colony Health remaining: 105

The Asteroid
While the Ocean World looked more welcoming and the alien ruins on the moon might have been the most obvious choice for exploration, there was no doubt in your mind that the asteroid was the right call for your temporary colony. It was far away from everything and with its unpenetrable core, it was the obvious choice to hide from the aliens. Since it was almost completely made up of valuable materials, there was a strong case to be made to start a mining operation until the Colombus returns.
You laid in a course heading for the solar terminator so you'd stay in an area that's neither too hot nor too cold. As the autopilot started its approach, an energy sphere appeared in the middle of your shuttle, violently screaming in some alien tongue. Khhgrrh! Kzhrbhhrk!! You did not understand a word of it, but it seemed what ever got inside your shuttle wasn't very happy with your approach of the asteroid...
@drillith: Your crew lacks any means of communicating or interacting with the alien entity. After several more incomprehensible screams, it violently starts shooting plasma bursts at you. KB-119 Kilbot quickly takes it out, but this robot is not known for its precise strikes, so the full blown counter-attack causes some additional damage to your shuttle.
Since your crew lacks a mechanic you don't have any means of repairing the shuttle. You set down on the asteroid without further trouble, but the damage has been done.
Result of Encounter:
- Attacked by energy sphere: 25 damage
- Used Kilbot in close quarters: 10 damage
- Colony Health remaining: 65
@craniuma: Your Communications Officer is on his feet immediately. After another violent shriek the auto translator starts to work ...you are violating Ptekorian space! Turn back immediately or suffer the consequences... After some discussion, your officer convinces the sphere that you might be authorized to land on the asteroid. After some dense seconds of silence, the sphere announces that it will check your claim with the Ptekorian Commonwealth and urges you to stand by. Immediately afterwards, it just disappears.
There's no telling whether this Ptekorian Commonwealth still exists or if you will ever hear back from that drone, so you cautiously land on the asteroid and decide to stay in hiding for some time.
Result of Encounter:
- No damage taken - well done Captain!
- Colony Health remaining: 100
@digital-wisdom: Your Mysterious AI starts interacting with the sphere at once. ...you are... viola... Ptekorian... space! Turn... consequences... and with that the sphere implodes, leaving only a dim glowing red crystal behind. It all happened too fast for you to comprehend, but it seems the Mysterious AI first got it to sever all connections to it's overlord and then self destruct.
Eliza is really looking forward to analyzing the hell out of this new found resource. From what she can tell, the crystal could still be used as some kind of energy source. There's no telling where that sphere came from or who sent it, so you cautiously land on the asteroid and decide to stay in hiding for some time.
Result of Encounter:
- No damage taken - well done Captain!
- New energy source gained: Colony Health + 5
- Colony Health remaining: 105
Alright Captains, you now know how each of your journeys started and how your crew managed to handle these initial threats. Nobody was eliminated on day one, so we'll be back tomorrow with the first 15 days of your stay in your (temporary) new home!

Hyperspeed to the eXode universe!
Fantastic! This is a real choose your own adventure experience.
It makes the game and the Exode universe come alive!
I hope to do better next round - my lack of a high level pilot is a defect in my cards - I was thinking of buying a Tyron but had hoped my mysterious AI might have piloting skills.
Landing is a day 1 event, let's hope the rest will go alright for you!
Starter content (such as a starter pilot, the civilian or the military one) can fit also for the challenge.
The fact that we were attacked is promising, at the very least it means there is an energy source on the moon! I just hope all the defenses are automated, because otherwise life will get difficult!
Thanks for posting! I look forward to day two!
Nice!, no damage for me, that was really close, I didn't expect to be missiled in my approach to the moon luckily I had Ayumi, fiuu 😅. Now in the exploration I expect hostiles automatic defenses and the like, seems dangerous and I'm not so confident on my build lol.
Admiral Valro saves the day!, Great idea for a contest and very much enjoy reading the stories
All I can say is . . . this is awesome!
Elite epic!
Ups, I forgot to wrote that I choose the Ocean World

I'm sorry exodegame-ru, you replied to the challenge after post-payout which marked the official end of the contest.
I hope to have you join in for the next round, but for this contest your post sadly doesn't qualify.
