Here is the last piece I made for the 2014 Fulong beach project in Taiwan. I had one more day left and a bank of sand to put manners on. I must say it was a brutal project because of the heavy, almost continual rain. My energy levels were also pretty low after the last piece so I was pretty much carving on autopilot.
I don't actually know who this was supposed to be exactly. All I know was he was some sort of famous monk that I was given some resource materials on and asked to create a portrait of him. Maybe @livinguktaiwan may know.
There was some text and a temple beside him that someone else carved, which may explain his identity. I was glad they didn't ask me to do the text as I would have been just transcribing it as an image and not have a clue what I was writing. This, I am sure could have made it illegible and knowing my luck I could have insulted someone.
As a project and country, I really enjoyed Taiwan. The work was difficult but the grace and kindness of the locals made up for it. People were always so helpful. I visited Taipei a few times on days off and every time I took out my map to see where the hell I was someone would approach me and ask could they help.
Normally when I go to a big city I will usually try and find the underground markets far off from the tourist routes. This is where you will find the best prices and the most interesting nick-knacks. I got a few gadgets and yokeymebobs but unfortunately nothing to write home about.
It was also a nice group of sculptors to hang out with and although we were all tired in the evening from the unrelenting rain we had some fun times,
As an Irish person, I thought that we held the record for rainfall but apparently, that title should go to Taiwan.
Ps
Thanks for reading. I use PeakD to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice, amongst other things. This will hopefully give it a new life on the Hive Blockchain. Below you will find some of my recent posts.

Really well done, skin like is like skin, drapery that feels like drapery, plus all the other elements. How did you do the eyes? I looked closely and it appears to be glass?
Thanks @nineclaws. The eyes are actually just a bit of sand hanging down to create a highlight and a nice deep hole for the pupils. It's all a trick of the light.

Amazing work. I too want to visit Taiwan one day.
I did three sculptures on the project and was part of a team of around 20 sculptors. Taiwan is very beautiful.

That's amazing.

tokens.I'm none the wiser unfortunately, but the calligraphy next to it is nice,
The north of the island is well known for being rainy, luckily that doesn't extend further down the island much. However, it can easily rival Ireland, and UK!!
He will continue to be unknown.
I heard that last year the monsoon did not arrive and it is a big reason why a lot of microchip technology is in short supply at the moment.
2014 was very wet but I really had a nice time there.

tokens. If Taiwan has wet and dry seasons and you went in the wet then yes it would win XD
Nice job with the portrait! You made it fit in really nicely with the temple and the calligraphy :)
And on the calligraphy you would have only had problems if you missed a stroke or something while copying XD
Apparently, it is quite wet in the north of the island but is drier further south. Maybe it was the rainy season but I have heard that it is known to be a wet place in general.
With the calligraphy I was worried that it might have ended up like one of those tattoos people get that says some ridiculous but they think just looks cool. At least having a naive writer do it the message would still make sense and hopefully spell out who the monk with the big ears was.
Thanks @ryivhnn

I have "one of those tattoos" (actually a few of them) but I do know what they say ;D I'm kind of half using them as glyphs though x_x
I get what you mean though, the Chinese dialects are ones I'm really not confident about attempting to actually speak because there's so many words that change meaning depending on stress x_x

This is a lovely portrait, I like the features of the face. I would not have thought that Taiwan is such a rainy place
