Gorhillo

Hello, OCA!

I put the breaks on painting and drawing for a week to learn creature design and concepting in 3D. It's an area of my skill that has been highly lacking and I have been neglecting, not only in 3D; but in 2D also.

It was a very enlightening exercise that help me notice a lot about my workflow and creative habits. Like how I close to never properly plan for my piece and how dodgy my research for my subject is. Another thing that I realized was I almost never ideat for 3D.

WIP

I started out with a sketch after compiling some reference images of Gorillas and Rhino's from Pinterest. This wasn't difficult since I already knew what I wanted to make, a Gorilla-Rhino creature. I imagined my creature with short stump horns but would leave that out of my final design because I couldn't factor it in the total use of the creature.

After doodling around, I went straight into Zbrush and started working. I began with lowpoly composition of sphere and cube primitives, something I've never done with any of my sculpts and models. It really helped block out and model the shape without worrying about high poly counts, since I'm running all of this in a low spec laptop.

I then merged and Dynamesh'd and my subtools and working in the mid-frequency detail with the Dam Standard and Clay Buildup. The work I put in while in the lowpoly stage help me focus on the mid-range detail here without having to do the bigger and broader along with the mid stuff. The only thing that changed in this stage was the legs because it read too much like a damned Gorilla than a fantastical creature.

I then moved on to posing. I previously thought I'd do that using a Zsphere rig that I bind to it so I need to give this multiple subdivisions and so I'd could pose and move the mesh without messing with the details on the mesh. Using Zspheres became quickly and needlessly complicated, and things started to get away from me. So I scretched that plan and just used the Gizmo and masking, which was way easier because I had the low subdivs to work with.

Render

Of all the processes, rendering was the most difficult part, owning to the fact that I doing all of this on a potato of a laptop and, worst of all, running blender so I can get a better lighting and shading. It wasn't complicated and all. I just slapped on the Principle shader and played a little with the property to dial in the skin and sub-scatter. I hope in the future I can afford a better PC or laptop for running all of this so that I work a little faster and suffer significantly less crashes.

Thank you for taking that little time to let me share with you.
