Arjuna, a key figure in Mahabharata epic.

in OnChainArtlast year (edited)

Hello dear Hive-Blogger...
today I'm gonna present another artwork I have been working on recently.
This time I'm inspired by Mahabharata , known as the longest epic poem of ancient India and the most revered one in Hinduism which was compiled between 3rd century BC–4th century CE.

Ancient Indonesian folks have once had their glorious Hindu-Era too and the center of the high cultured civilization was in Java, so the Javanese have their own version of Mahabharata as well. The main plot is basically the same. They only have few differences in some small details to make the location and the plots more relatable to javanese culture.
Religion is a product of culture, so anything related to religions would always develop differently in different countries. It's because they would naturally be integrated and assimilated to the original local culture.

Arjuna, my painting object this time, is one of the key figures in this epic.
He is known as the most handsome chivalrous hero among his peers who has a gentle bearing and personality. His look and gentlemanly vibe attract ladies and allowed him to marry plenty of them 😝.
In Java Arjuna would be described to be sooo good looking and gentle that makes him even more beautiful than a lady, that's why his character would often be performed by a lady dancer / actress in the show (Wayang Orang Show).

One could probably imagine that he has an androgynous look.
Nevertheless Arjuna is in fact a powerful fighter and especially gifted in archery, so he is still widely famed as a manliest man among men 😝.
Well... If it's in our era now one might possibly mistakenly assume him as a gay from his look and bearing, however those who know him would never say so... cos a gay would certainly not marry more than ten ladies and even manage to father multiple children with them LOL.

Anyway enough with the background story, let's just enjoy the art piece I created.
My drawing was made according to a description of Arjuna in javanese culture, so the costume is a javanese traditional costume instead of the indian one.
Here come the end result of the drawing and the pictures showing the process of work.
I hope you all like them.
Thank you in advance for your upvotes 😘.

This is an example of Arjuna presentation in a javanese opera show (Wayang Orang). From this video you can see that he is performed by a lady:

Very interesting story! Wanna see the real person in my dream.

Hahahahaha... just to admire, perhaps. But I think he's a kind of man that is hard to handle. Too many flies and butterflies buzzing around him LOL.

I have so many questions to ask him! I read a bit about him at school and his message impressed me deeply. He was talking about the essence of Buddhism and applied it to the battle field which was mind blowing to me! 🙀😂

Well... That's why Mahabharatta is known to be the fifth Veda.
Modern people might only see it as a kind of thriller/war novel with romance here and there, however the content is filled with plenty of spiritual messages. The teaching might not always be suitable for the modern way of life but there are still enough messages that is worth to ponder for.

I think this is one of your best. You are a very good artist (I'm jealous--When I draw people they look like gnomes 😆)

You capture both the feminine and the masculine in this one figure. It's complex, a kind of duality.

Definitely a beautiful figure, and very definitely strong.

I missed this when it was posted. We are trying to sell our house and there is so much to do. No time for much else.

Glad I caught the piece before the vote window closed.

Thank you :). Drawing living beings is difficult, I can't say that I'm good at it either, I still have to practice more especially in drawing males.

Yeah..tell me about it :-D. We are now in the process of doing the same thing cos we might migrate somewhere in the following years.

Migrating...that is a big challenge. Interesting that if you do your daughter may not even remember the early years spent where you live now. Perhaps not consciously, but they will always be a part of her.

Good luck!! We're moving a couple of towns over😆 (when we find a house!!)

It's a big challenge indeed and this is something we have been thinking about since quite long ago, but I was afraid to leave my comfort zone :-D.
My father in law is still around so we might still come for a visit from time to time.
About our daughter, well... she seems to be quite looking forward to it, and she seems to understand the consequence too..at least she does notice the fact that she will not have the opportunity to meet her Opa as often as now anymore, so recently she said that she wants to visit him more often than previously. On the other hand she also notices the other fact that it's more likely for her to meet her grandparents from my side more, and my family is bigger than her dad's family :).
We think, if we do want to migrate, then we should do it soon when she still hasn't any strong bonding with a particular friend. It will be more difficult to adjust the older she get.
Thanks for the good wishes. Good luck to you too in finding a new house.

Good luck to you too in finding a new house

Thank you! I'm trying to stay calm, leaning on my kids a lot.

Good luck to both of us.

Now it gets really complicated. Having barely made friends with Greek mythology, confronted the Norse and been overwhelmed by the Germanic, you draw me into the world of Indian mythology.
I find it remarkable that Arjuana had time to pose for you, in addition to power claims, intrigues and the usual murder and manslaughter.
But it was certainly worth it for the viewer of your work.
Ps: It seems to me that Cristiano Ronaldo has also played football in India.😉😎

I really do understand your argument... I actually felt the same way when it comes to this topic. Any kind of historical stories, be it the legends (pure fantasy) or the facts... both are horrible.

On the other hand, the other aspect of such cultural legacy is still fascinating to me.
If I see the beautiful temples, altars, churches or any other relics..it's so magnificent and admirable what human being ever had created for their belief..how much effort and sacrifices they have put to it... On the other hand, how sad that such resourceful species still haven't even managed to free themselves from poverty and misery after 2 millenias.
Up to these days, we still have the same issues as in the ancient era.

Well anyway, as an artist... I would still be drawn into the beauty of culture product anyway :).
Be it Eurepan ones, Indian ones, or Javanese ones... they have their own beauties.
From the personality I like the description of Arjuna, but as a modern lady, I despise his love adventures LOL.
When I made this artpiece, I was reminded on my childhood. I grew up in a small village in the 80's where we basically had nearly no entertainment, so whenever there is special celebration in the district capital where the city mayor paid for traditional shows like Wayang Orang or Puppet shows, my father took me and my little brother to watch it until breaking dawn. Really...I was a little girl but I loved it so much and could stay awake the whole night until morning just to enjoy the show.
I knew every single details of the plot be it Ramayana epic or Mahabharata epic, and knew every figures by heart even when I was just 6 yo. And my daddy has always been so proud of me. I had rather nice childhood despite being poor :).
So...this is how I could let Arjua pose for me hahahahaha, I knew him well since decades ago 😂 . It's very unfortunate than youngsters these days only know pop music and the city mayor seem to never arrange such traditional shows anymore.
I especially love the particular scene where Arjuna fight this little monster "Bambangan-Cakil" fighting dance scene... the dance move that the monster (Cakil) has to perform is especially difficult and it's actually rather funny scene normally.

The loss of interest in myths, legends, and history as such is vividly reflected in the question I am always asked by people who visit us for the first time: “Why do you have so many books?”
The almost notorious compulsion to retrieve half-knowledge from the internet and not even be able to process it does not bode well for the future.

Absolutely right. It's indeed the case.

Hermosa obra te felicito eres un gran artista. 🎨.

Muchas gracias :)
