I breathed #life into an old painting and updated it, which is appropriate since the theme is Persephone.
The story of Persephone comes from the ancient Greeks. It tells how, Persephone, the beautiful daughter of the Mother Goddess Demeter, was one day in the fields collecting flowers, when Hades, King of the Underworld discovered her and being so enamoured of her beauty, kidnapped her away to the Underworld.
Demeter soon noticed that he daughter was missing,and searched high and low for her daughter, but could not find her on the face of the earth. Becoming distraught at her loss, all of the plants stopped growing, flowering and fruiting and started to die off. It was then that Helios,the Sun God, who sees all, informed her of her daughters fate,
Demeter them implored Zeus, the King of the Gods to fetch her daughter back. Zeus then sent Hermes, the Messenger of the Gods, the traveller between worlds to descend into Hades realm with the order to return Persephone.
Hades could not refuse the order of the King of the Gods, but he tricked Persephone into eating some pomegranate seeds, knowing that eating any thing of the Underworld would bind her to it. Thus a deal had to be made that Persephone would spend half of the year with Hades and the other half with Demeter.
So overjoyed with her daughter's return, the plants sprung to life again, green and fruitful. Yet, each year when Persephone must return to Hades, Demeter pines for her daughter and all things green die off and the world is barren until Persephone returns once more.
Thus one of the meanings of the story of Persephone is the cycles of the seasons.
