The painting I will be describing is the right panel of a triptych called The Living Paintings. It symbolizes a dream I had in my twenties which if you are interested, you can read here:

I had to use the left panel as a template in order to get a matching frame.
The underpainting is black but i taped off the painted wooden frame which became shades of browns.
I built up textural whites on top of the cntral painting.
and then did alternative glazes of oil painting and white texture until i was happy with the base.
I then transferred my drawing onto the panel and started refining the background as well as painting the foreground.
When I felt the landscape was well enough along, I added an eagle rising from the smoke of a bonfire.
Because this panel is so much busier than the other two, it was important to compare it with the left panel in order to keep the color sheme harmonious.
You will notice in this final photo that I made the observatory and the central skyscrapers golden and green in order to pull those colors up to the top of the painting such as in the left panel. All three panels are covered with with 24 karat gold leaf.
