Hey Hive!
We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!
Now that we're done with another emote showcase, I thought it'd be a good time to take a break for a bit and share some other pieces I've done! This was actually from a while back in April 2023, but I found this video from Art with Flo that I thought was perfect to help me with character art!
Art with Flo is a youtube art channel I've been following ever since I got Procreate since she does lots of good tutorials on the app. She also has a series called You Can Draw This, where she takes you through the process of drawing a piece step by step. I love her videos since they're really easy to follow and she even gives the colour palettes and brushes that she uses in the video as well.
I've also learnt a lot of new techniques and shortcuts from drawing along to her videos and it's inspired me to try out different styles like this one! I've been wanting to practice drawing human characters since I'm so bad at them, but wanted a cross between realism and cartoon style, similar to this:
So when I found Flo's video I thought it was perfect to try and draw along! For this one we use the symmetrical brush to get the jaw and neck of the girl.
We also draw three equidistant markers for the eyes and nose and draw a sketch using them as a guide. This step took quite a bit of time for me since I wanted the eyes to and lips to look right.
But to be honest, it didn't have to be so exact since we were going to use a symmetry brush to fill in the colour of the eyes anyway. The sketch is really just a rough guideline.
We add some shadows on the eyes to show the eyelids and I never thought to do that before but it really adds depth to it, and makes sense since our eyes typically concave inwards, so the shadow would be from the forehead as well.
After that we draw in the lines for the nose and lips. I never knew how to draw lips but she mainly uses colour with a gouache brush to fill them in and just draws a line which is perfect and easy.
We use a Spackle brush to add in some colour in the face for shadows and highlights and it already looks so good!
The last thing was the hair of course and we use the Chalk brush and some of Flo's handy hair brushes to add some dimension to it.
In the end we get this, which I thought looked pretty good, and definitely looked the best of any human I've ever drawn.
She looks a little younger and smaller compared to Flo's version I think because I went with a rounder face but I think she still looks really pretty and cute! The main focus was the eyes, nose and lips anyway and I think it turned out really well!
Following along to this tutorial actually helped me in some other pieces including this one that I shared a while ago:
And this one I actually did for a game that I'm pretty proud of:
This one was a slightly different style since I wanted it to be more watercolour-esque but the eyes really helped me a lot and I think it turned out great!
I definitely need more practise drawing humans so I think I'll try to work on this style more, maybe with guys next time? We'll see.
Here's a timelapse for this girl drawing:
