Hey Hive!
We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!
We're currently on the series of commissions I did for one of my streamer friends who goes by Phangtasy on Twitch! I haven't done an actual commission in a long long time, but it is available upon request if any of my viewers or streamer friends would like me to do some art for them. Since Phangtasy does contribute quite a bit to our community so I was more than happy to help out!
I'd previously done some emotes for him which I'm glad he really liked, and his avatar is a pig which is quite easy to draw. Here's one of the older emotes I did for him (link to the post here):
Tbh I'm not fully satisfied with how this turned out but since I was new to animation at the time (and that was a free art) I left it at that. But now looking back, I know I can definitely do a better job now that I have more experience with animation.
Anyway, he ordered 5 emotes and thankfully had some ideas for them. One of which is a sleep emote and I found a bunch of references I thought were cute and let Phang decide which elements he wanted, like a nightcap, a blanket, pillow, drool, etc.
After that I combined all the elements he wanted and came up with a sketch, using the pig head I drew previously for a reference. The key thing he wanted was to keep the colours and style consistent and I personally wanted to as well.
Here's the sketch I did:
I meant to outline and send it to him to check again before colouring but I got a little carried away and just ended up finishing the emote; outline, colour and all.
Anyway, here's the outline:
I got a little too excited after I finished the outline that I went straight to colouring before sending it to Phang to see if it was okay, oops!
I added some shadows and highlights before adding in the ZZZs.
In the end we get this, which I thought looked really good, and I was so relieved that Phang loved it too!
There's a story about why the moon was changed, and it's quite personal but basically it was related to his partner whom he's not together with anymore, so he requested that I removed the moon from all the emotes. But I did initially draw them emotes with that crescent moon since that was his theme at the time.
Here's a timelapse for this emote:
I actually really liked how this one turned out! The colours are all very bright and pleasant and complement each other well too. I'm glad Phang loved it as well!
Thanks so much for reading!
