“When the artist finds himself he is lost. The fact that he has succeeded in never finding himself is regarded by Max Ernst as his only lasting achievement. ”
― Max Ernst
MEMORIES OF PABLO AND MAX
acrylic on paper, mounted on masonite, 8x7 inches (about 20x18 cm), 1995

This small painting was another one of my works when I lived in Canada, working on the railway and burning the midnight oil doing my art, or whatever my nights were in those days, since I was often working night shift, in the freight yard as well as on the road. Both Picasso and Max Ernst had influenced my work since the early seventies, so this piece, which started as doodle and a study for a detail in my larger canvas about Picasso, called Pablo's Last Concert, became a tribute to both, since in that large painting, I also used the decalcomania technique of Max Ernst.
