THE KEEPERS OF NO MAN'S LAND

“You are in no man's land. Which never moves, which never changes, which never grows older, but remains forever, icy and silent.”
Harold Pinter, No Man's Land

THE KEEPERS OF NO MAN'S LAND
acrylic on canvas - 8x10 inches - 1976
a early work from the seventies, painted in Lethbridge, Alberta

Decades ago, in the Seventies, I supplied a lot of works to a gallery in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. My larger canvases they bought outright (I used to have a contract with them), but smaller works like this I bartered for frames.

What exactly was on my mind in those days I don't know, but I voraciously read Fantasy, Science Fiction and related literature. I am quoting Harold Pinter because I was familiar with his work already then.

About No Man's Land in Wikipedia
According to Alasdair Pinkerton, an expert in human geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, the term is first mentioned in Domesday Book (1086), to describe parcels of land that were just beyond the London city walls.
The same term was later used as the name for the piece of land outside the north wall of London that was assigned as the place of execution.

I was contacted a few days ago by a relative of the former owners of the Lethbridge gallery (who have long since retired) and they would send me good photos of the works still in their possession if I would post them on my website for an estate sale.

@thermoplastic this painting I could indeed see as an amazing dust jacket for a scifi novel. I remember when young going to the used book shops and besides my normal obsession with dusty tomes of the 18th and 19th century being fascinated by the 60s-70's paperback scifi covers. The art was so mysterious and the colours both vibrant and moody. They'd draw you in.

It's exciting that you'll have that catalog of your old work from the gallery. This piece really pulls one in.

Thank you Donna - yes, I am excited to find out what else I had done in those long ago times that I forgotten about. Once I get more photos, I will post them as well.

Good to see you back my friend! Those subjects in your art remind me of the dudes in the movie Dark City! Cool art and i used to do custom framing and they can cost an arm and a leg... so, glad you had your deal with them back then. Take care brother!

Thank you - I wish I could time travel back. Much of the framed work I had I did sell, and in those days there was no digital camera, no internet, no social networks. I have very few records of my work from that time, but hope now to get a few more. The guy who took the photo has a excellent camera SONY 7C so I can look forward to good images. This work is rather simple, not using any of the "tricks" I had already developed at that time. I find it rather strong in its simplicity, perhaps something to get back into again, particularly now that my painterly skills have vastly improved.

Now I checked on the movie you mentioned: this is uncanny: my painting is from 1976, the movie is 1998! I looked at some stills .... seems like we were drinking from the same well!

Dude, if you haven't seen Dark City... then you are missing out. It was one of my favorite movies when it came out. I think i saw it more than 10 times at the theater. I will round up a streaming link for you to see it at your leisure.

ENJOY my friend. Yes, i used to take home all of the frames that were the wrong size or misordered or mildly damaged. I had a frame collection i intended to make and put art into... but i never did. I don't know what became of those super expensive custom frames due to my travels. Oh well.... hahahhaa I'm glad you have a way to get some high quality shots of your work now.

I made a post recently of a Work In Progress... you might want to take a look at when/if you get time. I'm about to go work on it some more now, in fact!

Excellent example of expressionism, great handling of balance in color temperature, and a very well achieved atmosphere.
Excelente muestra de expresionismo, gran manejo del equilibrio en la temperatura del color, y una atmosfera muy bien lograda.
