High school is a special place, a whirlpool of change, growth, and discovery. It's the setting where we leave the security of childhood and begin to shape our true identity. For many of us, our time in those classrooms, hallways, and sports fields is filled with experiences that greatly influence us long after we graduate. Thoughts on High School invites readers to take a trip down memory lane to a time when the world seemed both greatly close and wide, from peers to recollections. It was also a time of bonding with the teachers who guided us, the friendships that grew and changed, and the fleeting but unforgettable moments.
Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of our blog! Today, I want to share with you some of my favorite high school moments. While high school may have been chaotic at times, it was also incredibly memorable. Keep reading!
When I was in Grade 10, also known as 4th-year high school, I created a lot of memories. I found this class picture from my former adviser, who tagged us in it. When I saw the picture, one thing immediately came to mind: “I miss my high school.” Although high school was chaotic for me at times, and while it was the period when I first experienced being bullied, feeling anxious, and becoming overly grade-conscious, it was also a time of growth. Despite the challenges, I discovered my ability to perform in front of others, engage in sports, excel academically, and even become an essay writer in Filipino. These achievements made me proud and reminded me of the positive side of those years.
These two people in the picture with me are among my closest friends from high school. The first is Sheena, who was a transferee back then. She came from Washington, America, and moved here with her family. She was bubbly and friendly to everyone, which made it easy for some of my classmates to judge her based on her personality. Now, Sheena is back in Washington and is married. Although we don’t have direct communication anymore, we still follow each other on social media. It's funny how, after high school, we kind of became strangers.
Next is Isabelle, who is half-German. We’ve been schoolmates since kindergarten, all the way through high school, and even continued to be classmates in college. If you're from Danao, you may recognize her as the 1st Runner-Up of the Karansa Festival Queen and the 2025 Sinulog Festival Queen in Carmen. She was also the reigning beauty queen during our high school years. Now, Isabelle is happily in love with her boyfriend, a Tourism graduate, and works at Nustar.
One of the most memorable and busiest events during my high school years was the month of July, which was Nutrition Month. From kindergarten to high school, everyone had to participate. As far as I can remember, each class was divided into three groups: the first group was responsible for cooking, the second handled the table setting, and the third took care of the flower arrangements. For me, this was the busiest event because we had to decide on the menu, buy the ingredients and materials, plan everything, and coordinate with each other. It was tiring because we spent half the day preparing, serving our planned meals to the judges, and then sharing the lunch with everyone who tasted what we had cooked.
After a long day, this was our finished product. The table was cute, simple, and elegant in design. The group assigned to cooking did an excellent job. We were all very happy with the outcome, despite a few minor arguments along the way. I guess that’s normal in high school because we were still discovering ourselves and learning to balance independence with dependence. I believe some of us didn’t know how to cook or set a table properly, but we were all proud of what we accomplished. It was a true team effort, and it was rewarding to see our hard work come together.
Timelapse, it's already our baccalaureate mass. It feels like time is moving too fast. Our graduation day is quickly approaching. I always knew that once we graduated from high school, we would slowly start to become strangers. Some friends stay, but those who don’t value the bond we had as classmates slowly fade away. During this time, I began to realize how temporary life can be, and how people come and go. Every great experience feels fleeting, and yet, the achievements we gain become part of our success. Because no matter where life takes us, those successes will always remain in our hearts.
Graduation Day arrived, and everyone was excited, just like I was. I felt incredibly happy to graduate With Honors, having maintained that distinction from Grade 7 all the way through Grade 10. Seeing my parents so proud of me was a moment I’ll never forget. In addition to the honors, I also received a bunch of medals, if I remember correctly, I earned 14 medals and 2 certificates. I’m truly grateful for all the achievements I had during high school. It opened my eyes to the fact that the talents and skills I have can shape who I want to become. High school helped me discover my love for dancing, my potential as a journalist, especially since writing in Filipino is my forte, and it showed me that I can be whatever I want to be and more. At that point, I decided that I would pursue the STEM strand (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in Senior High School.
To this batch, I truly miss you all. I hope that one day, we can come together for a reunion. I know we’re all busy chasing the careers we’ve dreamed of, and some of us are already building our families. Even though we’ve gone our separate ways, please know that I’m cheering for you from afar. Seeing your life updates on social media always brings a smile to my face because it’s clear that you're all doing well and finding happiness. Congratulations to each one of you for staying strong and fighting through the challenges life threw at us. We’ve all made it through, pushing forward and finishing the things we once thought were unfinished business. We’ve come so far, and I’m proud of everything we’ve achieved. Congratulations on your success, and I look forward to the day we meet again. See you when I see you!
