War Story - Humanitarian aid by Voedselbank for Ukrainians in Netherlands | Good and Bad News

in Life Stories3 years ago

I have some good and bad news to share. Every day is challenging and I feel this suffering is not going to end soon. I need to prepare myself every day for the upcoming life war because it is just the beginning. Unfortunately, when I start thinking positively, things go sideways. This suffering started on the 24th of February and is still ongoing. Now, I am thinking that I should have a strong mindset to face these challenges. I guess I should have kept in mind that my suffering started when the war started and when I left my home. This whole situation is not going to be stable too easily. I have lost home, I have lost my money, my investments and now I don't have any proper place to stay. I have to depend on others for shelter and seems like I am looking for their help like a beggar.

I never thought that refugee life can be so devastating, I don't have any roof or anything. I have been moving from here to there continuously and now again I have to move. I don't need to leave the country but I need to find a place again to stay. I assume that's how homeless people live, today here tomorrow somewhere else. I can't even cry now, I don't cry because I have accepted that this is my fate. I presume that when you have nothing, you have to depend on others.

This is my situation...Confused, heartbroken, and waiting for a helping hand (basically saving) every day like a beggar... I am sorry but this is my situation now. I have to find a new place for me and my dog within a week in this country.

Let's talk about good things. I have met a few people here in this shelter and we talk to each other often. I mostly talk to a girl who fleed from Kyiv alone and staying here with us. She is very strong-minded and talking with her helps me a lot. Yesterday morning she suddenly came to my room and asked me if I wanted to go out with her. She had mentioned that she is going to a place along with other Ukrainians where gift vouchers will be given. I haven't received any money from the government so far so I have decided to go with her. Basically, I was more interested in the gift voucher and also wanted to spend some time with her outside. We normally met in the shelter so this was the first time I had got the opportunity to go out with her.

Spring started here already and every day is a beautiful day now. This is the best time of the year and people enjoy spending time outside. The city Almere has plenty of canals so wherever you go, you will see canals or waterbodies.

I along with other Ukrainians got ready and started our journey. I and my friend had no idea where we were going, we were just following others blindly. First, we took the bus and after 20 minutes, we reached the location. The city is very small so it's not very hard to find a place if an individual has a google map and proper address. The entire city is divided into two parts. We went to the other side of the city, the city is split by a huge canal.

When I reached the given address, I saw a large warehouse. I was not so sure at that moment what was that all about because I was expecting something like a shop or office, but it was a huge warehouse. It was early morning and nobody was around. After some time, a guy came to us and asked us where we were from. Then he told us to wait for some time because we need to register ourselves for the gift vouchers. I was not so sure what was the registration for but soon I understood the entire process.

The name of the organization is Voedselbank almere, I have acknowledged that this was an organization that helps people like us by giving food products and clothes. Voedselbank means food bank. They help those people who are unable to meet basic needs due to financial distress. Anyone can donate there too.

They provide 45-50 euros worth of food products to each registered person every month. We are refugees from Ukraine so they have organized a special program for us.

The registration process was easy, I just gave them my documents and they registered me. They gave me a card and told me that I have 22 euros for this month on the card and I can pick up anything from the store within 22 euros. I became confused and asked them where I have to go to pick up the goodies. They showed me the shop and I was surprised to see the shop. It was like a warehouse...

This was not a store, this was basically a place where you will get your basic needs things for your life. There were some shelves full of goodies, some vegetables, and groceries.

20220421_104852.jpg

I have picked up some stuff according to my needs. Some food products were completely free, especially onions, potatoes, and some vegetables. I didn't take vegetables because I don't have any place to cook here.

20220421_112803.jpg

They also gave us a nice grocery bag as well and told us to bring it next time for shopping. This opportunity was a big help for many people like us. I know for many people this amount of money is nothing, but for us, this is a big help. Sometimes we have to accept the situation and learn to appreciate it. This organization is helping a lot of Ukrainians now by giving them free food products and basic needs products. If I go to the megastore, I need money to purchase these goodies but here I got them for free which is a big help.

Sometimes I feel bad seeing my condition but I also appreciate this help as well.

One thing I can say is that day I have seen many smiley faces...

Your post is so heartbreaking.... It's not easy for us to just tell ourselves - I will think positively. It doesn't work. I am really helped by walks or any things that require going outside. The hardest thing is to force yourself to do it. It's good that you have a girlfriend. It's good to have someone to talk to. Hold on, darling.

I've just recalled - there is a website where Ukrainians can get a a psych consult. for free. Sometimes all you need is an ear to hear. Just look at it - https://mindlyspace.com/

I didn't know you moved to Netherlands. Your city is very nice, clean and beautiful. And it is so touching that people there are willing to help. I watch a TV program about food banks in US, it is actually like the Italian tradition of suspended coffee or pizza, but much more developed and extended.

Is there any chance to find a job there?

Hello @zirochka, how are you doing? I hope your health is doing better than before, I was thinking about you.

I moved to NL 2 and a half weeks ago from Poland. It's a beautiful city indeed and a lot of help is available here, especially different organizations helping people a lot. Even many families are hosting Ukrainians as well though I haven't found that option for myself yet. Here I thought food banks would be developed but I won't complain because I haven't checked Amsterdam one and Almere is a very small city. At least we have got something for the whole month.

Thanks a lot, I was looking for a psychiatrist. My last one didn't help my mentality much and I was looking for one here. Definitely gonna check it out.

For Ukrainians, they don't need a work permit to do a job here but I need it because my passport is not Ukrainian so my category and case are different. I am waiting to complete my registration process and after that, I can apply for the job.

I believe there are more free stuff for refugees from Ukraine as well. My work mate is in Austria now with his family. He said they are even going to visit Switzerland by train as tickets are free for them. Maybe you can find something too.

Job would be good for several reasons. First of all, it's money. Also, it is something that will make you focused on anything except war... And you will meet new people. It can help you to get out of the freeze and make your life spin up again.
Don't give up, dear.
XOXO

Yes, the train tickets were free for everyone who have fleed from Ukraine but now only Ukrainian passport holders only get that help, I am not and I came to know about that when I was coming from Poland to the Netherlands.

Yes, something similar I have heard today from a volunteer too, she was dutch and she said that after registration, I should apply for a job. I am not thinking about the money too much but if I need to rent an apartment here in the Netherlands, I definitely need a job. Rules are changing and as I am not a Ukrainian passport holder, sometimes people see me differently... I have heard that here, jobs are available. I think it would be a good idea to get a job and get to know people and culture here...

I always think about you and I really hope the best for you... Huggss...

Hope you will get your new document or registration or whatever they need. Think of you every day too 💙💛

I am happy to hear you are getting some help and have made a friend there to whom you can talk. Maybe the two of you can find a place to share when you find a place to live, as roommates, so you can keep each other company as you explore the options.

It also does my heart good to see that you and @zirochka are talking, two of my favorite women on Hive! I think of you both every day and sending my thoughts and prayers to both of you. 💜

I was thinking of this option too but she is afraid of dogs and is not very comfortable with the dog. I have seen many people who are not comfortable being around a dog and Gigi is a big dog so I always need to keep that in mind too. I also notified the volunteer about my case. Let's see how it goes...

She is brave and one of the persons I admire on hive. I also always think about her and pray for her safety...

Thank you so much for your good words. I hope you will meet more good people and make new friends that will love Gigi as well. Spring brings new life and hope to everyone....

My warmest hugs to you 🤗

It is a pity that a person had an animal as cute as Gigi, but I know we all have some peculiar fears.

Yes and I don't blame anyone because I have seen some people who somehow give an annoying look when they see my dog...

I grew up with dogs, cats and other animals at home, so I got used to most, but I admit that I do not get along with the chickens and I can not stand that the insects walk me down the skin, out of that, I think I do not have peculiar fears... except for snakes, I admit that I run as far as I can when I meet one.

I hope you can find a place to live in which Gigi is well received.

It hurts, but it is true that I have known that people who lose everything in a tragedy is in that situation of having to beg for help and that leaves the feeling of falling into a state of begging.

It is good that you were going to walk and that you will invite you. Now that you mention it, you have reminded me that I have a sister in Canada who works in a food bank and it is for her that I have known stories and things that people happen homeless, it is really a very difficult thing.

I wish you things to improve in a close time.

Completely agree and reality as well.

People are helping each other a lot but somehow I feel bad inside me and I feel guilty and so small in this world. I sometimes feel what I have achieved so far is nothing... Hopefully, I will be able to recover from my current situation...

I wish you better days and that your mood also improve accordingly.

I'm pleased you've met a friend. It is a pity she is uncomfortable with dogs. She might get better if she gets to know Gigi. I was a little scared of birds until my friend got a budgie. 🙂❤

I think it's a good idea if I introduce her to Gigi. But I also understand that some don't feel comfortable with dogs and seeing her situation, I can say she also has been dealing with a lot. Last time, she was saying that she is so exhausted and she just want to go back. You are right, probably she will be comfortable with Gigi if she gets to know her...

Yes, if she does it at her pace it might work. X

Hello my remembered friend @priyanarc, between the bad and the good you have to focus on the good, although it sounds difficult because of course you have to put yourself in your shoes to understand you and it is not easy what you have had to live you and many other people. I wish you find a place to be more stable without moving constantly, I am not in your situation but as a Venezuelan immigrant in another country I know how hard it is to start from scratch after having everything in your home but I was blessed to find people who supported me in my endeavors and now I have managed to be stable, I know I should not compare myself because what you have lived in Ukraine is indescribable, I just want to extend my friendly word that is the little I can do for you from time to time, when I am here on Hive.

...it seems that I am looking for your help like a beggar.
Sometimes we have to accept the situation and learn to appreciate it.
Sometimes I feel bad to see my condition, but I also appreciate this help.

Friend, you are a person who is not alone, look around you and you will see more beautiful things than the suffering that has touched you, lean on the good things to move forward, the day will come when you will look back and this nightmare will be in the past and I also wish that for all those who have suffered. I continue praying for you even if you don't see me here often.

I wish you find a place to be more stable without moving constantly, I am not in your situation but as a Venezuelan immigrant in another country I know how hard it is to start from scratch after having everything in your home

You are already feeling the pain and understanding the struggle. This is a lot to me because many people don't even understand what is war and how this can destroy a normal people's life. This is a bad, messy moment in life and it will take a lot of time to recover. My biggest concern is my dog, she doesn't like constant moving and she got stressed out easily after all of this. But, this is what it is, I don't have any other choice...

Life is not always negative, we learn to live and try to motivate ourselves every day. I am trying to keep my emotions away and not feel so bad, in fact, I am learning to appreciate the present life. Hopefully, the future will be better...

Thanks a lot my dear for such thoughtful words.. Huggss...

I am learning to appreciate the present life.

I celebrate that, live in the present my friend, with all that it holds for you. You are also a great friend to Gigi, hug her constantly to reassure her, she is a lucky dog to have you, I can imagine how anxious she is because you both have had to go through many changes and adaptations that don't quite materialize and keep moving and changing places, that affects humans but pets too. I get your hugs and send hugs back to you and Gigi, I am a dog lover and she is a good girl very pretty and brave like you.

Thank you so much my friend and Gigi says hi to you. She jumps around and sometimes greets people in a very unique way that makes people laugh. She has received a lot of love from people, she can easily make anyone happy.

I hope we both find a suitable place to live, I am really tired of moving from here to there.

I happily receive Gigi's greeting, it's like I'm watching her jump, she has won the hearts of many around here at Hive. You will find a good place to live, you will, many are praying for you and Gigi, for you deserve to rest. Forgive my delay, in attending your words that make me feel good, because they are a proof that you are well. Maybe you won't believe it but I appreciate you, you earned my respect and admiration since some visits in publications about architecture. You are a great girl.
