When I first joined the Hive chess community in 2018, it was called Steem chess. I wasn't even up to 18 years old but I enjoyed everything about chess.
There was no community page yet, but tournaments were held every Saturday, organized by @schamangerbert. It was a regular event, and I remember going to class every Monday, talking about it with my friends @perpz, @kintokris and @anonymee then. We enjoyed Steem chess because it was something different and new. Back then, things were very different from today. Two of my friends then didn't make it to Hive chess and neither did many other players. The players now are different and stronger. The average rating has gone up, and only a handful of us remain very active today. Players like myself, Jaki, stayoutoftherz, masterswatch, ropavejero, sammy, eniolw.
The Growth and Evolution Of Hive Chess
He hosts Hive chess every Friday, rewards chess players who create contents in the community, and does much more. His dedication has helped to keep the competitive spirit alive. After @jaki01 created the chess community here on Hive, it has been taking shape. It hasn't been easy because community growth requires alot. With chess players and other gamers,it's even more difficult because it's one thing playing chess for passion, it's another to create content or follow the blockchain activities without rewards. Despite these difficulties, the chess community has grown stronger and it's great to see it finally taking shape. One of the biggest reasons for this is @stayoutoftherz, who has personally taken it upon himself to make sure Hive chess continues and he does it week in,week out.
We've also seen significant improvement over the years
A huge increase in prizes compared to the early days
Hive chess players even got their own badge, which was a cool way to recognize active members.
A hall of fame account that documents winners every season
Different Variants and tournament Time controls have been introduced.
A poll is sometimes used to get the player's choice for the tournament style
Categories for different rating band to foster competition even in the lower divisions
There has also been a huge increase in participants over the years
Notable Collaborations & Support
While we still have @jaki01 and @stayoutoftherz supporting posts in the Hive community. One of the notable instances of support and collaboration we've had was with @leofinance thanks to @anomadsoul. For about four Hive chess seasons, we had Leo prizes which I think was a really cool period for the community.
You can find the results of his last tournament here.
With schamangerbert taking a break from Hive Chess,@sammy00 has also played a role in expanding the competitive chess scene on Hive, hosting separate chess events on Saturdays with Ecency and Hive prizes.
some votes to the pool and additional Hive rewards.More recently, @yabapmatt has stepped in to support this season’s Hive chess with
This is something I truly appreciate. As the founder of the most popular play-to-earn game on Hive "Splinterlands", it’s great to see him supporting another gaming community within the ecosystem.
The Future Of Hive Chess
I haven't been consistent with Hive chess or even Hive and I haven't demonstrated myself to be a leader when I had the chance. However, I wish and hope that the Hive chess community grows into a massive global community where chess players from all over the world join Hive, create content, and compete at a high level. Imagine a future where we have hundreds of active players, intense tournaments, and real recognition for the effort put into playing and creating chess content.
If we keep running events consistently, get more support, and work together, I believe that future isn’t far off. Chess has always been a respected game. With Hive chess, what we do is mix it with blockchain rewards and a strong community. I recently wrote about Chess Revolution and How Blockchain Technology Is Changing the Game! because I see how important it is now for integration of blockchain technology into chess. On Hive chess, we have that already!
I know we've come a long way, and I believe the best is yet to come. If you love chess, just keep playing, keep sharing your experiences and getting more people to join us. Like my friend will say, the more the merrier!
Also, If you're interested in what we do and want to support the Hive Chess community, your contributions, whether through participation, engagement, or any form of support, are greatly appreciated. Together, we can make Hive Chess even bigger and better!
