Reminder: Round 9 of the Hivechess Tournament S18 , Friday 19h GMT

Dear chess fans!

The penultimate round 9 of season 18 is played tomorrow Friday, 14th June 2024, at the usual time. The current standings after 8 rounds you can find here.

Since right now there is the bullet chess championship ongoing, for us it is bullet time as well! So prepare for blunders and time scrambles!

Mode: 2+1 (2 minutes per game, 1 sec. increment), 60 min. arena!

Tournament Link: https://lichess.org/tournament/gsXALIrn

The prize pool contains already app. 495 Hive (plus the 500 LEO)!

Rules

  • All players are welcome, also newbies, you just need a free Lichess-account and join our team in Lichess here (password is "Hive")!
  • Every Friday is one round.
  • Time mode is varying (5+0, 3+2, 2+1,...), sometimes Swiss, sometimes maybe Chess960 (Fischer Random).
  • The winner of each round gets the number of points equaling the number of players in that round, the second ranked one point less and so forth until the one on the bottom of the table who gets one point (i.e. the Lighteye-scoring). In order to be counted, at least 3 games must have been played.
  • In case two players have the same number of points, the one who played less rounds is first. If that is equal too, then the average tournament performance decides.
  • PAYOUT: The tournament points of the 10 rounds are summed up. 65% of all Hivechess-related post rewards go to the prize pool (PP). Each of the 4 rating-tiered tournament winners will get "x" Hive (at least 20), the runner-up "y" and the third "z" Hive (depending on the no. of players in each group). The rest of the PP is divided among all other players according to the number of tournament points achieved (75%) and the number of rounds played (25%). In order to qualify for a prize you have to participate in at least six of the 10 rounds!
  • There will be a special prize of 5 Hive for the player with the highest tournament performance in relation to his rating.
  • 500 LEO will be again sponsored by @leofinance, details to be determined
  • If I don´t know your Hive username, you won´t be considered for prizes, so please let me know your Hive name in the comments! Community or badge accounts can participate but are not qualified for rewards! Only individuals can get prizes.

Please share this announcement among your (chess) friends and colleagues!
The more participate, the more fun! And maybe some are even interested to join Hive and it´s Chess Community?

See you on Friday and good luck to all!

Last week I had played in an Austrian-wide rapid OTB tournament in Vienna. As mentioned there were several IMs and FMs participating. The venue was the same as last time, I had already described it here.

IMG_4361.jpg

All my opponents were apart from one higher rated than me (on average about 150 ELO pointa), and I made 3,5 out of 9 points - I am not thrilled but it could have been worse.
My ELO performance was slightly below 1800, at least some 50 points better than my actual (rapid) ELO. So it seems to be true that Lichess is overestimating the normal ELO ratings by several hundred points!
With Black I often got serious pressure right out of the opening and could gain only 1 out of 4. With White it was at least somewhat better and there I made 2,5 out of 5.

The only position I remember was this one where I had Black:

White to win.

After my last move Qc8?? (the other options were also losing) I thought I would be out of the woods, with his queen and rook hanging and the knight pinned.
Unfortunately my opponent found the only winning move for White which destroyed all my hopes. Can you find it too?

Here is the position (before my blunder), but try to find the solution by yourself first!

Sort:

I am always prepared to blunder after I make a great move!!!

(maybe some truth about the ratings): My chess.com ELO is about 300 lower than lichess.

I don't see a forced win; However White QF4 could lead to some interesting play and black Queen capture.

You forgot that I have a bishop on b7! So after Qf4 simply Bxd5

Well I always forget or don't see a "SNEAKY DAM BISHOP":):):).

Qf5 is the most logical move for white.

Correct! Did you find the solution by yourself?

That's the most logical move. Spent around 10 minutes looking for it. 🤩 !LOLZ

If at first you don't succeed...
... sky diving is not for you!

WOW what a position...even after looking at the postion I had to open Lichess to see wth is actually going on, so tricky yet so beatiful (I don't mean losing hehe).

See you all tomorrow 2+1 is going to be so much fun :D

Hello! Good to read from your offline activity. And thanks for the puzzle. After some minutes moving pieces, no way I will solve it. Yet thanks for setting up the board to analyze it a bit ... oh, speaking of which, I realized I can turn on the engine and found the move confronting the queens with Qf5. Anyway, looking forward to how the game actually ended.

I lost the game, apparently.

Yes, that's what I understood. Anyway. New game, new chance. :-)

Yeah, choosing the queen was a bad move. What about the bishop?

As mentioned, it would lead also to a lost position.

At least, it's not an easy one since the king has a chance to move. Making the opponent spend more of his time. Not an easy loss.😊

See you @ Lichess 🤓

Congratulations!
