On my day off, I went to Tsukuba Ishiyakiimo in Ibaraki Prefecture!
I saw a person on TV called the "God of Roasted Sweet Potatoes." He was using a special oven just for roasting sweet potatoes, and they looked so delicious! I really wanted to try them, so I was happy to finally go.
(In Japan, people sometimes call experts in a certain field "gods" as a sign of respect.)
It took three hours to drive from Kanagawa to Tsukuba, Ibaraki, using local roads.
My husband drove the car. He had watched a different TV program from mine—NHK’s Document 72 Hours—and had already become a fan of the warm atmosphere of the shop and the "God of Roasted Sweet Potatoes." So he happily took the driver’s role.
We woke up early and arrived at the shop before the official opening time, which was 11 AM.
The opening time was written as 11 AM on social media, but it seemed like the real opening time was simply whenever the sweet potatoes were ready.
I was amazed by the old-fashioned roasting oven and finally got my hands on the sweet potatoes I had been dreaming of.
The shop owner picked a good one for me from the oven.
We only stayed for about five minutes, but I felt completely satisfied.
There was no space to sit and eat at the shop, so we moved to a nearby park and ate the freshly roasted sweet potatoes there.
While eating, my husband and kids started talking:
"The person who picked our sweet potato wasn’t the 'God of Roasted Sweet Potatoes,' right?"
"Maybe the person cutting sweet potatoes in the back was the real god."
Meanwhile, I was only paying attention to the sweet potatoes and the oven.
I came all this way to meet the "God of Roasted Sweet Potatoes"… but in the end, I was just a person who came to eat sweet potatoes.
I felt like a bad boss who only looks at results but never watches people working. I should have paid more attention!
But the sweet potatoes made by the god were soft, rich, and unbelievably sweet.
Next time, I’ll make sure to greet the "God of Roasted Sweet Potatoes" properly!

休みの日に、茨城県の「つくば石焼芋」に行ってきました！
テレビで焼き芋の神様と呼ばれる方がいて、焼き芋専用の釜で芋を焼き上げているのを見て、おいしそう！行って食べてみたい！と思っていたので念願かなって嬉しいです。
（日本では、その道のエキスパートの方を尊敬を表して”神”と呼ぶことがあります。）
神奈川から茨城県つくば市まで下道で3時間。
車の運転は旦那氏が担当してくれました。
旦那氏は私が見たのとは違うテレビ番組の、NHKの「ドキュメント72時間」を見て、すでに人情味あふれるお店や焼き芋の神様のファンになっており、運転担当をかってでてくれました。
そんなこんなで朝早く起きて、焼き芋屋さんのオープン時間の11時より前にお店に到着。
オープンは11時とSNSに書いてあったけど、なんかもう、焼き芋が焼けた時間が開店時間みたいな感じっぽいです。
年季の入った焼き芋の釜に圧倒されながら、念願の焼き芋を購入。
お店のご主人が、釜の中から良さそうな芋を選んでくれました。
滞在時間5分程度でしたが、感無量。
お店の敷地内にはゆっくり芋を食べるようなスペースはなかったので、近くの公園に移動して早速できたての焼き芋を食べます。
焼き芋を食べながら、旦那氏と子供たちが
「焼き芋を選んでくれたのは焼き芋の神様じゃなかったよね」
「店の奥の方で芋を切っていた人がたぶん神様だよね」
とか話していました。
私ったら、焼き芋と釜しか見てなくて。
焼き芋の神様に会いに来たつもりが、結局は芋を食べに来ただけの人になってしまいました。
人の仕事を見ずに、仕事の成果だけをみる嫌な上司みたいになってしまい反省です。
でも、神様が焼き上げたお芋は、しっとりねっとり甘くてとにかく最高でした！
次に行くときは、焼き芋の神様にもちゃんとご挨拶したいと思います。
美味しそう！！

I used to watch NHK’s Document 72 Hours, it's a good documentary and more often than not I am always inspired checking out places from them. Sounds like you had a great trip!
