Dog's Birthday and Hive Birthday Month
My dog celebrated his 7th birthday this month. He's become much mellower and calmer compared to his puppyhood. Yet, he remains energetic and curious, always eager to explore something new.
He eats well and is very healthy. Last year, we reviewed his diet because he was slightly overweight. I wanted to reduce his daily meal portions. My husband and his vet agreed, so I started preparing boiled vegetable toppings and fresh fruit treats. We completely cut out flour cookies and peanut butter, which were common treats recommended by vets and local pet stores.
I never felt good about giving peanut butter to a dog. Since we changed his diet, he lost weight quickly and looks much healthier now. In a few years, we may need to switch to lower-fat dog food as he approaches eight years old.
The temperature has dropped a lot recently, but my dog loves going out to explore our property. We've had plenty of snow and continue to have snowy days. While I don't enjoy cloudy and snowy weather, I do appreciate sunny and cold days.
One day, when I took my dog out to check the property (his request, of course), I saw beautiful sunshine hitting the snow-covered landscape.
I noticed the reflection of the "Welcome" sign on the wooden fence. I didn't remove this sign from the entrance because it looks classic and suits the area's fisherman and shabby chic culture. I usually don't decorate my house with fancy decorations. They're not my style, but this sign felt right. The previous owner had decorated the house extensively, but I cleaned up almost all the decorations except for that one.
While we were exploring, we found fresh, large footprints as usual. I guessed that a coyote or possibly a deer had visited earlier in the morning.
My dog, wearing his winter jacket that looks like a detector vest, began investigating little by little with a serious expression. He sniffed around, carefully gathering information. I wanted to hear his "opinion," but he was too focused on his task to tell me anything.
Although he wasn't smiling yet due to his intense investigation, he kept checking to make sure I was following closely behind him.
He knows our property well and marked specific spots as we walked. I used to misunderstand dog marking behaviour because I had never had a male dog before. Since adopting him, I've learned that his markings are like friendly greetings to other animals, not just an attempt to erase their scent. He really is such a friendly creature.
We took a shadow photo together during our walk. I noticed my dog's ears were down, a sign that he was relaxed. When he's nervous, his ears go back and become less visible.
I see... After further investigation, we figured out that the animal had come from the road. I'm 80% sure the footprints belonged to a deer. It probably wasn't very big since our tree fences are quite narrow.
I always welcome deer on my property. Perhaps they even read the "Welcome" sign at the entrance!
By the way, I received a "Happy Hive Birthday" message from Hive. It's been seven years! I didn't even remember that I started my Hive blog the same year I got my dog.
I hope Hive continues for a long time, and I can keep sharing my stories as much as possible.

犬の誕生日とHiveバースデー
私の犬が７歳の誕生日を迎えました。子犬の頃と比べると、かなりおっとりとして落ち着いた雰囲気になってきました。けれども、持ち前の元気と好奇心は衰えていません。新しいことを探索するのが大好きです。
よく食べ、健康的です。去年、ちょっと体重が増え気味だったのでダイエットをするために食事を見直しました。日頃から食事の量が多いと思っていたので、減らしたいと思っていました。主人と獣医さんの同意を得て、茹で野菜のトッピングや果物のお菓子などに変えることにしました。小麦粉を使用したお菓子やピーナッツバターのご褒美は完全にやめました。獣医さんやペットストアなどではこういったお菓子をくれることが多いのです。
犬にピーナッツバターをあげるのはやめた方がいいと思っていました。食事を変えてから、みるみるうちに体重が落ちてかなり健康的な体つきに変化しました。もう数年したら、脂肪分の少ないドックフードに切り替えていく必要があると考えています。
このところ、かなり気温が下がっていますが、私の犬は相変わらず散歩に出かけるのが楽しみな様子です。雪がかなり積もったのですが、いまだに降り続けています。曇りの雪の日は好きではありませんが、寒くても晴れの日は好きです。
先日、犬に散歩を催促されて連れて外に出てみると、きれいな日差しが雪をキラキラと照らしていました。
木のフェンスの上に、太陽の光に照らされた「ウェルカム」の文字が反射していました。この辺りは漁師やシャビーシックが似合う地域なので、このデコレーションは取り外さずにつけたままにしてあります。私はあまり派手に飾り付けをするのが好みではありません。前の家主さんは家を色々と飾りつけていたようですが、ほとんど取り外して片付けました。この看板だけは、なんとなく雰囲気に合うのでそのままにしてあります。
裏庭の探索中、新しい足跡を見つけました。朝早く訪れたコヨーテか鹿の足跡でしょうか。
冬のコートを着た私の犬は、捜査官のベストを着ているように見えてきます。おそらく深刻な捜査の途中なのでしょう。辺りの匂いを嗅ぎ回って、情報を慎重に集めています。彼の意見を聞きたかったのですが、かなり真剣そうなので邪魔はできませんでした。
深刻な捜査の途中は、ニコリともせず真剣な眼差しで一生懸命チェックしています。私は後ろをついて歩いていたのですが、ときどき後ろを振り返って確認してきました。
彼は家の土地を熟知しています。これまでにオスを飼ったことがなかった私は、マーキングの習性のことをよく理解していませんでした。彼を飼うようになってから、マーキングをするのは単に他の動物の匂いを消して自分の匂いを付け替えているというだけではないのだということがわかってきました。おそらく、挨拶のような利用法もあるのではないかと思うのです。友好的な性格の犬なので、他の動物たちに挨拶をして歩いているような気がします。専門的な見解は分かりませんが、彼を見ているとそう感じるのです。
歩きながら私たちの影の写真撮影をしました。彼の耳は下にストンと垂れているので、リラックスしているようです。緊張感のある時は、耳が後方に向くので写真には写らないと思います。
なるほど…。捜査の結果、おそらくこの足跡の持ち主は道路から家の敷地内に入ってきたようです。約８０％の確率で鹿だと思います。ただし、この狭い木々の間を通り抜けられるような小柄な鹿だと推測します。
鹿の訪問はいつでも歓迎です。たぶん、彼らは家の前の「ウェルカム」のサインを見て来たのではないでしょうか！
ところで、Hiveから「ハッピー・Hive・バースデー」のメッセージが来ていました。ブログを始めてからもう７年も経つのですね。家の犬と同い年です。犬を飼い始めた年にHIveを始めたのは、すっかり忘れていました。
Hiveが長く続いて、できるだけ長く書き続けられたらいいなと思っています。
