Snow, Slippery Roads, and Retirement Daydreams
The snowstorm has been relentlessly sweeping through colder regions lately. Although we don't get heaps of snow where I live, it's still bitterly cold, and daily snow shoveling has become a necessity.
When I went to town today, it was -6 degrees. I saw workers shoveling snow along the slippery, ice-coated roads. Fresh snow blanketed the ice, making the streets treacherous. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the snowplow trucks had spread salt, turning the once-powdery snow into a sandy, slushy mess that was both unstable and uncomfortable to walk on.
This would never happen in my home country. Back there, people don’t use salt on the roads. Instead, snow gets packed down, making driving surprisingly smooth. On steep roads, heating systems are installed to melt snow, and in some towns, hot spring water keeps the streets clear. Such clever systems make winter a bit more manageable.
In Canada, salt seems to be the go-to solution for snow-packed roads. I've trained my whole life to navigate snowy and icy terrain, but this sandy, half-melted road is a different beast altogether. It messes with my instincts! My brain expects snow to be either hard-packed or fluffy and fresh, not gritty like a beach in winter. Speaking of sandy beaches, walking on one in snow boots? Yeah, that’s a challenge I’d rather not imagine.
At least my dog has no issues. With four legs, he’s a pro at navigating any terrain.
I posted before about a growing hole on the road in my neighborhood. It’s getting worse, but I doubt anyone will come to fix it. I wonder if someone might repair it in the spring. Fingers crossed. It’s dangerous now, and I can only imagine it’ll get even bigger if left untouched.
In the forest, I spotted coyote footprints the other day. It made me wonder how cozy life must be for coyotes here. There's plenty of food, peace, and shelter in the quiet woods—an ideal lifestyle for them.
Speaking of ideal lifestyles, I often think about where I’d like to retire. What kind of life would suit me best?
First, I need nature. My dog thrives on exploring wild places, and honestly, so do I. But living in the countryside forever? That’s tough. I’d miss the conveniences of urban life. Public transportation, for example, is essential for aging gracefully.
Then there's snow shoveling. How long can I keep this up? It’s exhausting. I’ve learned to use specific muscles to avoid back injuries and always switch hands to balance the strain. But honestly, I dream of the day I won’t need to shovel at all.
Luckily, my dog is a flexible little adventurer. I think he could adapt easily to any new place we might move to.
As winter continues to challenge us, I can’t help but reflect on the balance between nature and convenience. For now, I’ll keep shoveling, observing forest trails, and dreaming of a place where life is a little less slippery but still filled with wonder.

雪、滑る道、ぼんやりと考える将来のこと
相変わらずの寒さが続くなか、容赦ない吹雪にみまわれている土地が多いと思います。私が住む地域も豪雪地帯に比べるとそこまで降雪量が多くないとはいえ、相変わらず寒く、定期的に雪かきをしなければなりません。
今日、町に行くと、マイナス６度でした。一生懸命雪かきをしている作業員を見かけました。氷の上に降り積もった雪はツルツル滑りやすいです。除雪車が塩を撒いていくので、雪がサラサラの土状になってとても歩きづらいです。
私の故郷では塩を使わないため、このような現象は起こりません。道路の上に厚く降り積った雪はかたくなります。その上を平然と車を運転するのは、いつ見てもすごい光景だなと感心します。融雪システムがある街もありますし、急な道にはロードヒーティングが設置されている街もありますし、温泉を利用した融雪システムがある街もあります。
一方、カナダでは塩を撒くのがメインの雪道対策です。かたく降り積もった雪道を歩くことが当たり前の環境で育った私にとって、塩でとけて砂状になった雪の上を歩くのはどうしても慣れません。これまで培ってきた雪道を歩く技が全く役に立たないのです！降り積もった雪かパウダースノーの上を歩く歩き方とはぜんぜん違う技が必要なので、少々混乱します。例えると、ビーチの砂浜をスノーブーツで歩く感覚とでもいうのでしょうか…。なかなかその不快感に慣れません。
私の犬は、私と違って４本の足でスーッと上手に歩きます。
近所のこの危険地帯について、以前書いたことがあります。まったく工事をする気配がないので、どんどん穴が大きくなって危険度が増しています。春になったら修復するのでしょうか。私のそんな心配をよそに、日に日に穴が大きくなるばかりです。
森の中にコヨーテの足跡を見かけました。コヨーテにとって住みやすいあたたかな森なのではないでしょうか。この森には食べ物が豊富にあって、平和で守られた空間で、コヨーテにとっては理想的な生活様式なのではないかと思います。
理想的な生活スタイルといえば、私はよくリタイア後の生活について考えます。自分にとってベストな生活様式はどんな感じなのでしょうか。
まず、自分にとって自然は必須条件です。私の犬も自然探索が大好きです。でも、正直に言うと、いつまで田舎暮らしを継続できるかどうかは疑問です。とてもタフな暮らしです。便利な都会暮らしも、もちろんいいなと思います。公共の交通機関があるのは、老後の自分にとってはかなり大事な条件だと思います。
そして何より、雪かき問題です。いつまで雪かきができるのでしょうか。とても重労働です。長年かけて腰や体を痛めない筋肉の使い方は身についているとはいえ、雪かきのない暮らしは理想的です。
私の犬は本当に柔軟性があります。どんな環境にも直ぐに慣れ親しむことができていいなと思います。
厳しく長い冬が続くと、自然と便利さとの狭間の理想的なバランスについて考えさせられます。今は、雪かきをして、森を散策して、滑る雪道を歩きながら、いろんな想いを馳せています。
