And we are just one step away from the long-awaited One Piece Chapter 1000, I did this review a little late, since I should have published it a few days ago, but I was a little busy, besides that I am thinking about which manga now will take the place of Chainsaw Man for the weekly reviews, maybe it will be Boku No Hero, but I have some more in mind. The spoilers of the chapter 1000 have already been published, and I have seen a few, although not completely, I want to save the surprise for when the complete chapter comes out, which legally is published next year, but always by this time you can filter the chapter many days before.
One Piece 999 "The Sake I Brew While Waiting For You" begins showing us a flashback, in it we see Yamato and Ace fighting in Onigashima. Yamato tells Ace that his father (Kaido) went on an expedition and that none of his top officers are on the island. Everyone is surprised to learn that she is Kaido's daughter, but the battle continues.
Yamato says that even though protecting the island is not his responsibility, he must stop all the destruction they are causing because of the fight, he says all this while watching the destruction caused. Ace manages to notice the handcuffs that Yamato has in his hands, and then one of Ace's companions asks him if he is okay, and that now they are going to take the kidnapped back to the main island (Wano), since the reason they went to Wano was to save those people, at least that is what the manga explains for now.
However, the battle between Yamato and Ace continues, since Ace refuses to believe that Yamato is so strong and that she is not an important rank within Kaido's crew, beyond being his daughter. The battle continues and intensifies, as the two fighters are both heavily wounded and Ace turns to Yamato saying: That they (Ace and Yamato) do not choose their parents and that if he is going to allow Kaido, besides chaining his hands, he is going to do it with his heart and will. To Ace's words, Yamato answers that: She wants to go on adventures just like Oden once did, she wants to live free. He says all this while decapitating a statue of a dragon that represented Kaido. In response to Yamato's answer, Ace smiles and hits the statue as well, leaving a melting mark due to his fire powers.
After that, we see the two drinking sake, since they have made peace. Yamato says that after she can get rid of those chains, she will go sailing on the sea. Then he asks Ace what he's eating outside of Wano. And Ace tells her about some pirates who are causing quite a stir around the sea. All the pirates Ace mentions are well-known characters. However, soon the pirate is going to come out which will be the most formidable of all (referring to Luffy).
The flashback ends and we return to the present. Where Yamato met Momonosuke and Shinobu. She continues talking and says that Ace told her before he left that the damage he caused to Kaido's statue will serve as a warning to him, however, Kaido was never able to find it. Monosokue and Shinobu are surprised to learn that Yamato is Kaido's daughter, since until that moment they did not know. Momonosuke asks Yamato why she is telling them this story, she answers that Ace died 2 years ago and that he was...
They change the scene and this time we meet Tama and Nami. Tama mentions that she was training to become Kunoichi to wait for Ace's return and that Luffy was very insensitive when he told her that he had died. Nami replies that Luffy has always been that way, but that Ace's death also affected him very much. Tama is very surprised by Nami's words.
But once again, we are moved. This time we are inside the castle. Queen orders them to attack Marco, and even though some hesitate to do so, he saved them from becoming ice demons, even if they are going to attack him. Marco tells Brook and Robin to go inside the castle (to another part of the castle). The soldiers surround Marco and attack him, but it is useless, since Marco transforms himself into his full Phoenix form, takes Zoro by the shoulders with his claws and returns.
As they fly, Marco has a memory, and again the chapter presents us with a flashback. In this flashback, we see Ace insistently asking who was the one who occupied his previous position in the crew (referring to Oden). Izo mentions that they learned of Oden's death several years after it happened. Then Marco mentions that, they thought many times about going to Wano to avenge Oden, but that in doing so there would be many sacrifices. Ace, very upset, tells BarbaBlanca to let him go to Wano alone (when Ace first went to Wano, it was when he had his own crew, then he joined BarbaBlanca). Whitebeard furiously replies that: He (Ace) could not defeat the person who defeated Oden, implying that Whitebeard not only held Oden in high esteem, he knew how strong it was, even though they do not know what Oden's "defeat" really was.
We see Ace lying on the ground, with a few blows to the head, and Blackbeard tells Ace that: Oden was very strong and that if he (Ace) really wants to defeat someone as strong as Oden (referring to Kaido) Marco answers Blackbeard and tells him that: Ace doesn't want any kind of fame. Ace mentions that he wants to get stronger so that he can keep his promise. Then both Izo and Marco tell Ace that if one day Whitebeard gives him permission to go to Wano, they can count on him. Ace ends by saying that with the two of them they can defeat Kaido. Ending the flashback with Marco shedding a tear as he remembers his old crewmate.
We see Marco together with Zoro going up, but upstairs King and Queen await them transformed into their prehistoric forms. Queen tells Marco and Zoro that the samurai have probably already died (referring to Kinnemon and the others), while King tells her that: All that remains is to kill the son of Oden, and after that has been done, the battle will be over. However, very epically, Marco answers that they are now facing the "New Generation" and that they will be very surprised if they are underestimated. Following these words from Marco, Queen pulls a gun out of her mouth and starts shooting at Marco, but we already know that these attacks are futile.
After this, once again we are moved and again we return to Tama, who is surprised to learn that Ace was Luffy's "brother", and now she feels very bad for treating Luffy badly when he told her that Ace had died. However, Nami tells her that it doesn't matter, because Luffy didn't bother with it, and that they better go ahead with the plan they are making.
At the same time, Momonosuke learns from Yamato that Ace was the son of Gol D. Roger and was also Luffy's brother. Yamato continues talking, and says that everything that is currently happening cannot be a coincidence and that of the many people in the sea, they (Kinnemon, Momonosuke and the others) were the ones who brought Luffy to Wano and that this is a matter of destiny. Furthermore, Yamato continues, that Luffy has the letter "D" in his name. He says all this while holding Oden's diary, which has many secrets.
We reach the final part of the manga, in which we see in the distance, Zeus and Prometus who are recharging their energy. Big Mom asks if Luffy has already gone up, and then tells Kaido that he can kill anyone he wants but leave Nico Robin alive.
On the last page of the chapter, which is a wonderful double page, we see Kaido, totally relaxed, drinking sake. He asks Big Mom, if his three-eyed daughter can't read the ancient texts yet. Big Mom answers that she cannot wait for her to awaken her true power. The conversation continues and she asks Kaido where he plans to drop Onigashima. He tells her that in Wano there is still a castle that honors the Kozuki clan. Big Mom tells her that the inhabitants of Wano do not know that they will die, but Kaido does not care that he can obtain slaves with great ease. He says all this while imagining what Onigashima will look like in the capital of Wano. Big Mom asks him if he is in "Road Poneglyph". But Kaido tells him that if it is not too soon to show his true interests. Big Mom, upset that Kaido still doubts her, tells her that: She still doesn't consider him as her younger brother and that besides, in that day of the great fight in God Valley, she gave him her mythological devil fruit and at this moment one of the most unexpected plot twits and reliefs of this manga is coming. Since Kaido appeared in the form of a dragon, everyone thought she had the devil's fruit model dragon, others thought that Kaido was a pure dragon, but with this all these theories come down, since the devil's fruit of Kaido is the Model Fish, later I will explain that. Big Mom tells Kaido that he owes her a debt of life. Kaido tells him that they will talk about it later, once they get the One Piece. Finishing the chapter one step away from the 1000.
As you will see, the revelation that Kaido's fruit is the One Piece is the most unexpected revelation in this manga, but it has its explanation. There is a myth which says that a group of Koi fish tried to climb a waterfall, but they could not, however, one of them could do it and climbed the whole waterfall, that is why the gods, impressed by that Koi fish, turned it into a dragon. And the devil's fruit of Kaido is based on that myth. Just like the Magikarp Pokemon, which as it evolves becomes a dragon fish.
