Millennium Actress, una película de Satoshi Kon en la que se relata sobre una actriz que alguna vez fue famosa y su pasado, aquel que fue moldeado por un fatídico evento. Al cerrar un antiguo estudio de cine, un director de documentales llamado Genya busca entrevistar a una de sus actrices más famosa, Chiyoko, retirada hace tiempo y que en esos momentos vive en aislamiento. Genya, que es un gran admirador se las arregla para conseguir una entrevista con Chiyoko y esta le da una llave. Esto desencadena aquellas viejas memorias y empieza a contar sobre su pasado, la historia de cómo se convirtió en la actriz de varias películas muy reconocidas.
Instead of simply telling his story and showing us scenes from his memories, Kon takes us back in time and together with Genya and her cameraman “travel through time” in a somewhat particular way to document his life. The director and the cameraman act in these scenes as if they were part of the story. But Genya, being an admirer of Chiyoko, cannot remain calm, and to the concern of the cameraman, he begins to include himself in her films, always as a character who helps her in everything he needs. This technique is quite good, as it makes the narration much more engaging compared to if he had not interacted in any of these scenes.
Kon en vez de simplemente narrar su historia y mostrarnos escenas de sus recuerdos, nos lleva al pasado y junto a Genya y su camarógrafo “viajan en el tiempo” de una forma algo particular para documentar su vida. El director y el camarógrafo actúan en estas escenas como si ellos fueran parte de la historia. Pero Genya, al ser un admirador de Chiyoko, no puede permanecer tranquilo, y para preocupación del camarógrafo, este comienza a incluirse en sus películas, siempre como un personaje que la ayuda en todo lo que necesita. Esta técnica es bastante buena, ya que hace que la narración sea muchísimo más atractiva en comparación a que si él no hubiera interactuado en ninguna de estas escenas.
Chiyoko being a famous actress, she has acted in countless movies. Genya, in the company of us viewers, we have the opportunity to relive the various roles of her. She has a wide range of performances, ranging from a WWII nurse to a geisha and even an astronaut (did someone say Barbie?). She is a joy to go from one movie to another, we have no problems in these transitions since she is well worked. These films have a common theme and it is about her chasing a dream of hers, a love of hers for that enigmatic painter who gave her the key many years ago.
Chiyoko al ser una actriz famosa, ha actuado en innumerables películas. Genya, en compañia de nosotros los espectadores, tenemos la ocasión de revivir sus diversos papeles. Ella tiene un amplio rango de interpretaciones, que van desde una enfermera de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta una geisha e incluso una astronauta (¿alguien dijo Barbie?). Es un goce pasar de una película a otra, no tenemos problemas en estas transiciones ya que está bien trabajado. Estas películas tienen un tema común y es sobre ella persiguiendo un sueño, un amor por aquel enigmático pintor que le dio la llave hace muchos años.
I would have liked this mysterious painter to be more relevant to the plot, as he doesn't contribute as much as you might think at the beginning of the film. Neither Chiyoko's career nor life is about this man, but about subsequent events in which he acted as a catalyst. The plot itself is about that passion and the love that drives her, not about the romance that she may feel for him. The denouement of the painter leaves much to be desired; however, hers is excellent better than he expected.
Me hubiera gustado que este misterioso pintor fuera más relevante para la trama, ya que no aporta tanto como se puede pensar al principio de la película. Ni la carrera, ni la vida de Chiyoko tratan sobre este hombre, sino de los eventos siguientes en los que este actuó como catalizador. La trama en sí trata sobre aquella pasión y el amor que la impulsa, no sobre el romance que pueda sentir por él. El desenlace del pintor deja mucho que desear; sin embargo, el de ella es excelente mejor de lo que esperaba.
Capturing different scenarios from the countless Chiyoko films brings great complexity to the narrative and what animation itself is. I especially liked how the older her film was, only Genya and the cameraman had color while the others didn't have as much color. As always Kon and the excellent editing of him.
Plasmar diferentes escenarios de las innumerables películas de Chiyoko aporta una gran complejidad a la narrativa y lo que es la animación en sí. Me gustó especialmente cómo cuanto más vieja fuera su película, solo Genya y el camarógrafo tenían color mientras que lo demás no tenía tanto color. Como siempre Kon y su excelente edición.
Millennium Actress is a tribute that recalls the life of a great artist, evokes us different feelings ranging from sadness to joy. It is an exciting journey through the life of an actress and the passion that sparked it all. A few weak moments, but great nonetheless. The narration form was quite creative, I really liked it.
Millennium Actress es un homenaje que recuerda la vida de un gran artista, nos evoca diferentes sentimientos que van desde la tristeza a la alegría. Es un viaje emocionante a través de la vida de una actriz y sobre aquella pasión que lo provocó todo. Unos momentos débiles, pero geniales a pesar de todo. La forma de narración fue bastante creativa, me gustó bastante.
