(ESP-ENG) Shelter - A story in 6 minutes? - Short Movie Review!

No friends, this is not a clickbait or a joke, it is a reality that surely few know about. Having the ability to create a story by itself seems incredible to me, not everyone has that gift, but if we add to this that it must be told in little more than six minutes, do you think it's possible? The thing is that A-1 Pictures, this studio super recognized for making things like Sword Art Online, Ao no Exorcist, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Erased, among others, decided to work with a couple of DJs (Porter Madison and Madeon), very anime fans, to make what would be a video of a song. What they didn't know is that this short ended up being one of the best things ever made with these characteristics.

No amigos, esto no es un clickbait ni una broma, es una realidad de la que seguramente pocos conocen. Tener la capacidad de crear una historia de por si me parece increíble, no todo el mundo tiene ese don, pero si a esto le sumamos que debe de ser contada en poco más de seis minutos, ustedes lo creen posible?. La cosa es que A-1 Pictures, este estudio super reconocido por hacer cosas como Sword Art Online, Ao no Exorcist, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Erased, entre otros, decidió trabajar con par de DJs (Porter Madison y Madeon), muy fanáticos del anime, para hacer lo que sería un video de una canción. Lo que no sabían es que este corto terminó siendo de las mejores cosas que se han hecho con estas características.

Shelter tells the story of Rin, a young girl of about 17 years old, who lives all alone in a virtual world, it's like a simulation of what the world was; it's just her and her tablet, nothing else. The thing is that every day she wakes up waiting for a message that never arrives, nor will arrive, more than 2500 days, about 7 years immersed in the same waiting and routine. Rin has the ability to create with just a few strokes the world she wants, whatever she wants to see and do is at her fingertips. But as the seconds go by, we realize that not everything is what it seems, that the situation and the context is much harder and sadder.

Shelter nos cuenta la historia de Rin, una joven de unos 17 años más o menos, quien vive completamente sola en un mundo virtual, es como una simulación de lo que fue el mundo; es ella junto a su tablet, nada más. La cosa es que todos los días ella se despierta esperando un mensaje que nunca llega, ni llegará, más de 2500 días, como 7 años inmersa en la misma espera y rutina. Rin tiene la capacidad de crear con solo unos trazos los mundo que quiera, lo que ella quiera ver y hacer está al alcance de su mano. Pero conforme avanzan los segundos nos vamos dando cuenta que no todo es lo que parece, que la situación y el contexto es mucho más duro y triste.

I don't want to tell you more so that you can go and see it and so as not to condition you, but what I can tell you is that it is an extremely sad story and even a story of resilience. Do you know how hard it must be to be in a world surrounded by immense loneliness? and also waiting for something that may never come? - Rin's life is like that. Many people ask for an anime about this and if they look at the plot it can give a lot of play to create something much bigger and extend the story because when watching this short it generates some questions but personally I would not do it, I think the magic of this lies in that everyone understands what they like and like Rin build the answers to their questions.

No quisiera decirles más para que vayan y lo vean y así no condicionarlos pero lo que si puedo comentarles es que es una historia sumamente triste y hasta de resiliencia. Saben lo duro que tiene que ser estar en un mundo rodeados de una inmensa soledad? y además esperando algo que puede que nunca llegue? - pues la vida de Rin es así. Muchas personas piden un anime de esto y es que si se ponen a ver la trama puede dar mucho juego para crear algo mucho más grande y extender la historia porque al ver este corto se generan algunas preguntas pero personalmente no lo haría, creo que la magia de esto radica en que cada quien entienda lo que guste y que al igual que Rin construya las respuestas a sus preguntas.

Answering the question I asked at the beginning, it is more than clear that if the work is well done and there is a beginning, development and end, it is super feasible that a story works even in less time. Shelter has that capacity and more than enough. Another ingredient here is to remember that this is a song so it is vital that you pay attention to the lyrics to connect better. In the end this is a story of unconditional love, death, nostalgia; everything that led Rin to be where she is is is because of these three elements and I am 100% sure that many will empathize with her, especially with the ending when they discover everything.

Respondiendo a la pregunta que hice al principio pues es más que claro que si el trabajo está bien hecho y hay un inicio, desarrollo y final, es super viable que una historia funcione incluso en menos tiempo. Shelter tiene esa capacidad y de sobra. Otro ingrediente acá es que recuerden que esto es una canción por lo que la letra es vital que le presten atención para que conecten mejor. Al final esto es una historia de amor incondicional, de muerte, de nostalgia; todo lo que llevó a Rin a estar donde está es por estos tres elementos y estoy 100% seguro que muchos empatizarán con ella, sobretodo con el final cuando descubran todo.

The animation is perfect in every way, there's a reason it's from A-1 Pictures. From the first second, that shot of Rin underwater, you know that what's coming is of great quality. The details in nature are very well done, the character design, the fluidity, the use of 3D very appropriate; absolutely everything is worth it here, visually it's a gem. I find it incredible that a short film of just over 6 minutes has these finishes and Xs franchise movies look so bad; definitely in anime animations are everything.

La animación es perfecta en todos los sentidos, por algo es de A-1 Pictures. Desde el primer segundo, esa toma de Rin bajo el agua, sabes que lo que viene es de una calidad grande. Los detalles en la naturaleza están muy bien logrados, el diseño de los personajes, la fluidez, el uso del 3D muy apropiado; absolutamente todo vale la pena aquí, visualmente es una joya. Me parece increíble que un corto de poco más de 6 minutos tenga estos acabados y películas de Xs franquicia se vean tan mal; definitivamente en el anime las animaciones lo son todo.

In the end we are with something that may make us reconsider many things in our lives, seeing this we can understand that sometimes we turn small things into storms and as they say “we drown in a glass of water”. Little Rin, even being alone, tries to be the best she can be, she understands her situation and assumes it as I think very few people would, that's why I told you about resilience. One of the teachings and message that Shelter leaves us is that, the power of accepting things.

Al final estamos con algo que puede que nos haga reconsiderar muchas cosas de nuestras vidas, viendo esto podemos entender que a veces las pequeñas cosas las convertimos en tormentas y como se dice popularmente "nos ahogamos en un vaso de agua". La pequeña Rin, aún estando sola, busca estar lo mejor posible, entiende su situación y la asume como creo que muy pocas personas lo harían, por eso les dije lo de la resiliencia. Una de las enseñanzas y mensaje que Shelter nos deja es ese, el poder de aceptar las cosas.

Thank you for reminding me of this masterpiece. It is a great way for getting emotional (not for everyone though - when I showed it to my mother, she apparently didn't get the story and only noticed that the girl is sitting on her tablet all the time).

It's really emotional, when you understand Rin's reality it's extremely sad. It is certainly a masterpiece, I didn't know it and it left me very surprised and amazed.

Luh I've already watched this on YouTube before! I really thought it's from an anime series (an anime amv), but after watching it, I realized it's a short movie. I really cried during and especially after watching it. It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking. And the animation! Yeah—it's really awesome watching how smooth and beautiful the art style is. All in all, I enjoyed how brief and meaningful it was.

I didn't cry but it is something that makes people quite emotional and sentimental, as it happened to me. Incredible that in only 6 minutes they had the ability to generate those feelings in the viewer. And yes, the animation is the best, the level of strokes and details is top notch. Like you, I enjoyed it a lot!

Oh, I see.. I do have a low tolerance for emotional movies then... and yes, it's really incredible that a six-minute movie made me feel a range of emotions in a short period of time.

Sometimes, things are better left as it is. :) When we change the format, some stories would be dragging and it wouldn't be as impactful as the original. Messages are relayed in various ways... and some ways are better that others. :)

Totally agree with you, I think if they were to make an anime of this the mystique of the story would be lost as well as its essence. The impact it has is because everyone can imagine the story and its ending as they prefer. The message is very clear and that in such a short time they have been able to show it is something very top.
