Hello everyone, my anime fanatic friends, I hope you are all doing great today... this time I want to share with you all a review of an anime that was super special to me, since it was one of the first anime I watched a few years ago, and I recently rewatched it to get a little nostalgic, you know? Haha, and it was definitely one of the ones that touched my heart the most... well, without further ado, today I want to talk to you about the anime: Charlotte... starting off, this anime is an adaptation of a light novel, so if you have experience watching these types of anime, then you probably already know what to expect haha, but well, let's start with the premise... it seemed completely crazy to me.
We're talking about a weird world where a small percentage of teenagers develop special abilities during puberty, sounds great, but there's a little catch here... these abilities are hilariously flawed, I mean, not everything is nice and cute, for example, there's a kind of super speed that makes you move fast, but you don't control the output impulse at all, which makes you constantly crash into walls, and many other superhuman abilities that are quite curious and flawed... in the center of all this chaos we'll meet our protagonist, Yu Otosaka, he has the ability to take control of someone's body for 5 seconds, but he faints afterwards, which he uses in a somewhat irresponsible way... into the equation enters Nao, a very cute and sarcastic girl, who can turn invisible, but only to one person at a time... together they'll embark on a new adventure, and they'll meet many more teenagers with powers.
This story presents us with a different idea, of having superpowers, with a funny twist that makes them almost useless most of the time, the first episodes feel a bit repetitive, I realized that the second time I saw this series.. I must admit that it becomes very episodic.. we will slowly get to know each of the characters, we will discover some peculiar powers, we will laugh at their pranks, etc. But let me tell you, once you get to episodes 6 and 7, it's like someone flipped a switch that changes the entire series.. what started out as a light comedy suddenly throws you into a much deeper and more exciting territory, I was not prepared for this sudden change.. you can go from one moment being really funny, you're laughing at the antics of these characters, and the next you're clutching your chest because the drama comes and hits you so hard, it's one of those transitions that is so unexpected, but I have to say, I liked how it worked here this time, it feels planned and not pulled out of the hat.
Hola a todos amigos fanáticos del anime, espero que hoy se encuentren súper bien.. en esta ocasión quiero compartir con todos ustedes una reseña de un anime que fue super especial para mí, ya que fue uno de los primeros animes que vi hace algunos años, y recientemente volvi a verlo para llenarme de un poco de nostalgia, saben? jaja, y sin duda fue uno de los que más me tocó mi corazoncito.. bueno, sin más que decir, hoy les quiero hablar del anime: Charlotte.. empezando, este anime es una adaptación de una novela ligera, así que si ustedes tienen experiencia viendo este tipo de animes, pues probablemente ya saben que les espera jaja, pero bueno, empecemos con la premisa.. me pareció una completa locura.
Estamos hablando de un mundo rarito en el cual un pequeño porcentaje de adolescentes desarrolla habilidades especiales durante la pubertad, suena genial, pero aquí hay una pequeña trampa.. estas habilidades son graciosamente defectuosas o sea, no todo es bueno ni lindo, por ejemplo, hay una especie de súper velocidad que te hace moverte rápido, pero no controlas para nada el impulso de salida, lo que hace que constantemente te estrelles con las paredes, y muchas otras habilidades sobrehumanas que son bastante curiosas y defectuosas.. en el centro de todo este caos conoceremos a nuestro protagonista, Yu Otosaka, él tiene la habilidad de tomar el control del cuerpo de alguien por 5 segundos, pero se desmaya después, cosa que usa de manera algo irresponsable.. a la ecuación entra Nao, una chica muy linda y sarcastica, que puede volverse invisible, pero solo para una persona a la vez.. juntos emprenderán una nueva aventura, y conocerán a muchos más adolescentes con poderes.
Esta historia nos presenta una idea diferente, de tener superpoderes, con un giro chistoso que hacen que sean la mayor parte del tiempo casi inútiles, los primeros episodios se sienten un poco repetitivos, de eso me di cuenta la segunda vez que vi esta serie.. debo admitir que se pone muy episódico.. conoceremos poco a poco cada uno de los personajes, descubriremos algunos poderes peculiares, nos reiremos de las travesuras, etc. Pero déjenme decirles que una vez llegas a los episodios 6 y 7, es como si alguien activara un interruptor para cambiar toda la serie.. lo que comenzó como una comedia ligera, de repente te sumerge en un territorio mucho más profundo y emocionante, yo no estaba preparado para todo este cambio tan brusco.. puedes pasar de un momento muy divertido, estás riéndote con las travesuras de estos personajes, y al siguiente estás agarrándote el pecho porque el drama llega y te golpea con mucha fuerza, es una de esas transiciones que son tan inesperadas, pero debo decir que me gustó como aquí en esta ocasión funciono, se siente planeado y no sacado de la manga.
Speaking a little bit about Yu, his development as a character is one of the best parts of the series, in my opinion.. at the beginning, you can see that he's a pretty selfish, arrogant and a bit of an idiot boy.. as I was saying, he uses his powers for the most trivial reasons in the world, like cheating on exams or impressing some girls, it's quite a typical thing that a teenager with these powers would do, really, so it gives it a bit of realism haha.. but as the story progresses, you as a viewer can appreciate how little by little he grows and changes, ever since he meets Nao, he starts to be a better person.. and just speaking about this girl, she is a truly unforgettable character, her personality is strong, sarcastic and she has a direct attitude that is strangely charming.. but underneath all that, she's a really compassionate person, and who genuinely cares about others..
I have to admit that she was my first anime crush, I actually obsessed over her for a long time... she's the kind of girl you wish existed in real life, because she's definitely a complete charmer in every sense, but anyway haha, the dynamic between Yu and Nao is great... they're like Ying and Yang, and their relationship drives a lot of the emotional weight of the story. Now, I have to talk a little bit more about the change in tone, because it's one of the aspects that I found most memorable in this anime, as I mentioned before, the first episodes are almost pure comedy and slice of life situations, but then the drama comes and you can really feel impacted by all the sadness and pain.
It's like the creators decided to emotionally destroy you on purpose, and honestly, it was something that I quite liked... by the time the series reaches the halfway point, everything starts to get a lot darker, and the plot changes completely, giving you beautifully executed plot twists. Without giving too many spoilers, there are moments that made me cry, and this is not an easy thing at all, it is a type of narrative that will surely stay with you for a long time.
Si hablamos de Yu, en mi opinión, su desarrollo de personaje es una de las mejores partes de la serie. Al principio puede que lo consideres egoísta, arrogante y algo tonto. Como dije, usa sus poderes para las razones más mundanas del mundo, como hacer trampa en los exámenes o impresionar a algunas chicas, lo cual en realidad es bastante normal. ¿Qué haría un adolescente con esa habilidad? Le da un poco de realidad. Jaja... Pero a medida que avanza la historia, como espectador, puedes apreciar su crecimiento y cambio poco a poco, desde que conoció a Nao, comenzó a convertirse en una mejor persona.. Hablando de esta chica, es un personaje verdaderamente inolvidable, de voluntad fuerte, sarcástica y tiene una actitud directa pero increíblemente encantadora. pero, sobre todo, es una persona verdaderamente compasiva que se preocupa profundamente por los demás.
Debo admitir que fue mi primer crush del anime, en verdad me obsesioné con ella por mucho tiempo.. es el tipo de chica que quisieras que existiera en la vida real, porque sin duda es un completo encanto en todos los sentidos, pero en fin jaja, la dinámica entre Yu y Nao es genial.. son como el Ying y el Yang, y su relación impulsa gran parte del peso emocional de la historia. Ahora, tengo que hablar un poco más del cambio de tono, porque es uno de los aspectos que encontré más memorables en este anime, como les comentaba anteriormente, los primeros episodios son casi pura comedia y situaciones de slice of life, pero luego llega el drama y realmente puedes sentirte impactado por toda la tristeza y el dolor.
Es como si los creadores decidieran destrozarte emocionalmente a propósito, y honestamente, fue algo que me gustó bastante.. al momento en el que la serie llega a la mitad, todo empieza a tornarse mucho más oscuro, y la trama cambia completamente, dándote giros de guion bellamente ejecutados. Sin dar muchos spoilers, hay momentos que me hicieron llorar, y esto no es algo para nada fácil, es un tipo de narrativa que seguramente te quedará con ustedes por mucho tiempo.
Now, as for the ending, this is where fan opinions start to split.. personally, I think it was something that left me with mixed feelings, on one hand, it’s ambitious and ties up a lot of loose ends.. on the other, it feels rushed, very rushed.. the last episode tries to cram so much into 24 minutes that it feels like it could have easily been stretched out over 3 more episodes. For example, the emotional development of certain characters and the repercussions of the final decisions could have been explored in much more detail.. also, some of the key scenes that explain the outcome of the plot feel too tight, which takes away from the impact of moments that could have been much more unforgettable. I don’t consider it to be a bad ending, but it did leave me feeling a little empty and wanting much more.. I think there was a lot of potential left unexplored.
That being said, I must say that this series has its merits… as I was saying, it’s very emotional, bittersweet, and leaves you with a lot of food for thought, something I must mention is the connection with Angel Beats… if you’ve seen this series, you’ll notice some similarities in style and tone, both series have that unique ability to balance humor with sadness, and both were created by Jun Maeda. There’s a signature touch that’s hard to describe, but it’s instantly recognizable… if you watched Angel Beats and liked it, you’ll most likely enjoy Charlotte as well, but it should be mentioned that many people may have had too many expectations for this anime… as they were expecting something very similar to Angel Beats, and that wasn’t the case. The pacing of the first episodes is a weak point, they’re fun, sure, but they don’t hook you right away… and also, some secondary characters feel underdeveloped, they’re introduced, have their moment, and then seem to disappear into the background, it’s a shame because as I was saying, there’s a lot of potential in this story. Also, I have to say that I found the animation to be solid, but not particularly outstanding... it's good, but I feel like if a little more love was put into it, key scenes would have been beautiful and impressive... but again, I don't think that's a bad thing.
Ahora, en cuanto al final, aquí es donde las opiniones de los fanáticos empiezan a dividirse.. personalmente, creo que fue algo que me generó sentimientos mixtos, por un lado, es ambicioso y ata muchos cabos sueltos.. por otro, se siente apresurado, muy apresurado.. el último episodio intenta meter tantas cosas en 24 minutos que parece que podrían haberlo extendido fácilmente en 3 episodios más. Por ejemplo, el desarrollo emocional de ciertos personajes y las repercusiones de las decisiones finales podrían haberse explorado con mucho más detalle.. también, algunas de las escenas clave que explican el desenlace de la trama se sienten demasiado apretadas, lo que resta impacto a momentos que podrían haber sido mucho más inolvidables, no considero que sea un final malo, pero me dejó sintiéndome un poco vacío y con ganas de mucho más.. creo que quedó mucho potencial sin explorar.
Dicho esto, debo decir que esta serie tiene sus méritos.. como les decía, es muy emocional, agridulce y te deja muchas reflexiones para que tú pienses, algo que debo mencionar es la conexión con Angel Beats.. si has visto esta serie, notaras algunas similitudes en estilo y tono, ambas series tienen esa habilidad única de equilibrar el humor con la tristeza, y ambas fueron creadas por Jun Maeda. Hay un toque característico que es difícil de describir, pero es instantáneamente reconocible.. si viste Angel Beats y te gustó, es muy probable que también disfrutes de Charlotte, pero hay que mencionar que muchas personas tal vez tuvieron demasiadas expectativas por este anime.. ya que esperaban algo muy parecido a Angel Beats, y eso no fue así. El ritmo de los primeros episodios es un punto débil, son divertidos, claro, pero no te enganchan de inmediato.. y además, algunos personajes secundarios se sienten poco desarrollados, son introducidos, tienen su momento y luego parecen desaparecer en el fondo, es una pena porque como les decía, hay mucho potencial en esta historia. Además, debo decir que la animación me pareció sólida, pero no es particularmente destacada.. es buena, pero siento que si le fueran puesto un poco más de amor, las escenas claves fueran sido bellas e impresionantes.. pero de nuevo, no me parece algo malo.
Despite its flaws, this is a series that left a mark on me and I look back on it with a lot of nostalgia and fondness. It’s funny, emotional, and makes you reflect on how the interactions and decisions we make can have a much deeper impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. It made me think about how even the smallest moments of vulnerability can lead to big changes and how empathy and sacrifice play a crucial role in human relationships, this is the kind of anime that will take you by surprise as it starts off pretty simple and then bombards you with all these layers of depth and emotion. By the time I finished it, I felt like I had been on a long journey, which although it didn’t end particularly how I wanted it to, I’m grateful to have watched it. So, do I recommend this anime?
Absolutely. Just saying, I recommend you go in with the right expectations, it’s not a perfect series, but it’s definitely worth a lot of your time. I give it a solid 8.5/10 rating. The highs are amazing and the lows are forgivable, and overall it's a unique journey that I'm sure can stay in the minds of many... it's ideal if you're looking for something that will make you laugh, cry and at the same time think, I'll leave the opening below, which is one of the things that I also really liked about this anime... you don't know how many times I repeated it when watching the episodes, haha. A pesar de sus fallos, esta es una serie que dejó una huella en mí y la recuerdo con mucha nostalgia y cariño.. es divertida, emocional, y te hace reflexionar sobre cómo las interacciones y las decisiones que tomamos pueden tener un impacto mucho más profundo en nuestras vidas y en las de quienes nos rodean. Me hizo pensar en cómo incluso los momentos más pequeños de vulnerabilidad pueden llevar a grandes cambios y en cómo la empatía y el sacrificio juegan un papel crucial en las relaciones humanas, este es el tipo de anime que los tomara por sorpresa, ya que comienza de una manera bastante simple y luego te bombardea con todas estas capas de profundidad y emoción. Para cuando lo terminé, sentí que había estado durante un viaje largo, que aunque no terminó especialmente como yo quería, agradezco haberlo visto.. Entonces, recomiendo este anime?
Absolutamente.. solo digo, recomiendo que entres con las expectativas correctas, no es una serie perfecta, pero definitivamente vale mucho tu tiempo. Le doy una calificación sólida de 8.5/10. Los puntos altos son increíbles y los bajos son perdonables, y en general es un viaje único que estoy segura que puede quedar en la mente de muchos.. es ideal si están buscando algo que los haga reír, llorar y a la vez pensar, les dejaré el opening aquí abajo, que es una de las cosas que también me gustaron mucho de este anime.. no saben cuántas veces lo repetía cuando veía los episodios, jaja. I decided to watch this anime because there were many images on social networks of people crying for “X” scene and as I'm a little masochistic I said “let's give it a chance” hahaha and without a doubt, the way the protagonist used his powers at the beginning is what any teenager would have done 😂
Nao was my favorite character, so much charisma in one character 😍 and yes, the plot changed completely from one chapter to another and that made me love this anime 😢
